The turbo on my 86 GLHS is toast. I am going to put a spare Garrett on the car. The Garrett is off an 89 Daytona Shelby.

What issues will I have if I remove the EGR set up? From what I've read I should back the timing off, but this throw a code?

I thought I'd post this here before hitting the tech forums as I figure someone here with an 86 or 87 GLHS has come across this problem.

You can eliminate the EGR setup entirely with no codes. I had the one on my first '86 GLHS blocked off for many years with no issues. No need to adjust timing at all.

Sweet. Thanks Alan!

Will I have any problems using the 2.5 swingvalve with a 2.25 downpipe? I have a new 2.5 exhaust for the car and a spare 2.5 downpipe, maybe I should just do all that at the same time.

You can't bolt the 86's 2 1/4inch downpie to 2.5inch swing valve. Time to upgrade.

Thanks. I'll have to see what the FWD exhaust kit I have includes. I'm thinking that piece of the exhaust that bends around the shifter, I'll have to get that fabbed into a 2.5 piece.

hmmm interesting, what kind of power do you think it could make with the upgraded turbo over stock?? i have a 84 that needs a turbo and i have a 87 TII turbo waiting, don't you need to swap the exhaust manifold over or notch it because the TI is diff than the TII

Yep, the T1 and T2 exhaust manifolds are different, you'd have to dremel or machine off the top of the manifold where the turbo bolts to it. I know this description isn't good but basically that's what you'd need to do.

I don't know how much more power I'll make over stock. I just want to make any power at this point, the car was really gutless with that bad turbo on there. I expect the 2.5 swingvalve and the new exhaust will free up some good power.

using a Dremel to make this notch would be RIDICULOUS; at minimum you need a 4" angle grinder or bench grinder; a die grinder would work but would take a long time ... there is A LOT of material to remove

you don't need the notch on the exh mani (or accompanying notch on turbo turbine housing) UNLESS you need the clearance for a late-TI/TII 'one-piece' or a TII 2-piece intake mani ; if you have the early-TI 'log' intake mani then you can swap the TII turbo without any clearancing required; it will bolt up to your "TI" exh mani no problem

if you swap the TII turbo on your TI log car, you should swap the compressor housing from the TI turbo onto the TII turbo (then you can sell the TII compresor housing) OR be prepared to do some custom plumbing to match the TII outlet to the log intake mani inlet

OR swap a late-TI one-piece intake at the same time (and update electronics to match) hell may as well add an IC too and do the full TII conversion
