Once a car enter a California junkyard, it's good as crushed.

too bad it can't be sold as scrap to you and then you could have the title rebuilt else where.

You need to find someone at the California DMV who is willing to listen to you about the car being rare and having some significant historical value. Bring some of the information with you and the VIN. There's a loophole in almost any laws, you just need to find the right person willing to lend a hand. At least let them know at the salvage yard what's up with the car and not to completely scrap it out until you've had a chance to talk to the DMV about rescuing it.

I agree!
It's a one of a kind historical vehicle and somehow it should be saved. Even if it can never be put on the road. It'd be a great trailer queen going to shows and tracks!

Got you save it! Even if it involves a nighttime break in with a Navy seal team and helicopters or filing a petition with the attorney general's office of California! . Just throwing some possible ideas out there..

Too bad it’s all the way on the other side of the country from me.. :(

that's one law that should be reversed! So stupid. If someone wants to put in the TLC to bring back to life a special, or unique car, they should be able to. You can't even buy it as salvage??

chances could be that the yard dosen't wanna be bothered with getting the title work done to sell the car

also asking a second time might get a diff reply
- consider.. how many times do you think people ask about buying cars from them without ever comeing back again
easy just to say no & hope they go away
for most yards the u-pic area is just a gravey cash flow - their main interest is gonna be the scrap metal weight - someone picking a few parts off won't affect that much

This is most likely the real issue that's going on. They just don't want to be bothered. Alternatively, if you really pressed them and revealed the rarity, they might do it, but an inflated price.

Given that likely reality, the best bet would be to buy it in large chunks (i.e. quarter-panel at a time). A cordless sawzall is a wonderful tool.

But somebody needs to step up and do it sooner rather than later. It looks like that car has been there since April, so it may be due to hit the crusher soon.

I can't believe a huge stink hasn't been made about this car being there. It should be all over the internet, the news, the junkyard owners should know what they have. Perhaps they wouldn't crush it if they did.

Which junkyard in Cali is it in? Laws do have work-arounds, sometimes the price might be wrong but the value is right.
