Has anyone thought about the alternatives to Pinks? I'm talking about Land Speed Racing. No cash Payouts like Pinks All Out, you don't lose your car like regular Pinks. And there seems to be no sandbagging.
I was browsing through a ECTA (East Coast Timing Association, the rules are the same as SCTA the people that run Bonneville), after looking through the rule book it looks like our cars would stand a good chance to set a record in the smaller displacement forced induction classes. Especially with an aerodynamic body style. It doesn't get the same TV coverage as Pinks, put it does get quite a bit of magazine coverage.
I mean I really like TD day at Cecil and I'm sure Turbopalooza is a blast. I just thought it might be a great alternative to supplement the few times we get together each year.
ECTA holds 5 weekend long events at Maxon Laurinburg, North Carolina at an abandon airstrip. 1 mile to build up speed, one timed mile and 1 mile shut down are.
There schedule is :

2007 Calendar

March 31 - April 1
May 19 -20
June 23-24
September 22-23
October 20-21

Event Schedule

Friday:
8:00 AM until 5:00 PM – Track setup and vehicle inspections
Saturday:
8:00 Vehicle inspections
9:00 AM – Drivers’ meeting & rookie orientation
9:30 AM until 6:00 PM – Racing
Sunday:
8:00 AM until 2:00 PM - Racing

They also have a street only class with a max speed of 135 mph (No cage required)

I just thought I'd throw this out as idea for debate. If there was enough response I'll go ahead and pay for a copy of the complete rulebook.

how is this an alternative to pinks?

Maybe an alternative to drag racing.......but how does this have anything to do with a TV show?

Nobody sandbangs when they are at the drag strip just trying to make some passes for fun.

You are absolutey right, I could have certainly could have chosen the wording for the title of my post much more effectively.

My intent was to stimulate some thought, I know there are are some members that have contemplated building a car for Pinks, I only wanted to suggest an alternative. A group may want to build a car that the can use repeated for years to come.

I realize that it has little to do with a nationally distributed weekly television show. However, I have seen coverage in Hot Rod (In fact they sponsor a class). Popular Hot Rodding Magazine, Car Craft, Sport Compact Magazine and Turbo.

I have also seen coverage on Speedvision and Powerblock.

MY point is this, Pinks lose the 3 out of 5 and your done (Plenty of sandbagging!!!), Pinks All Out single elimination tournament. Where as ECTA it's just you against the clock and the national record book.

I've had contact with a trans builder that seemed excited and felt that with available transmission gearing, 400 hp and our best aerodynamic body one of our cars should be able to reach 210-215 mph in the flying mile. I find that exciting, that's the same speed ex Nascar cars run at Maxton.

Yes, I know when we race for fun we don't sandbag, Pink's is another story.

Thanks, for the reply.

The sandbaggers are competing in a competition they like.

if you dont like that then dragrace for fun or landspeed race for fun.

I'm not too sure my TD would hold up at top speed for a whole 2 miles. lol.

plenty of sand baggin in drag racing... you need to hit up a real street drags type set up like we got here www.realstreetdrags.net
straight up hustling!!! im guilty of it... done it afew times at rsd come out of the hole light and back off the gas early..... or launch it hard and slowly let out at the top end.. part os the street racing game
back on subject.,. the land speed stuff is cool but i dont think there are many td's still around that would hold up and feel safe at that kind of speed
