The World of Speed 2009 was both good and bad.
As already noted, it rained Monday. The rain had soaked into the salt by Tuesday so the start of the meet was delayed until Thursday.
I got out there early afternoon Thursday. Just off the pavement was a small lake! It is a good thing Intrepid had trucked in many tons of salt to the area or it would have been much worse. (Intrepid is the company that now runs the salt mining operations in the Wendover area. They really recover other minerals and the sodium chloride is a byproduct. As part of the Save the Salt program they and the predecessor companies have agreed to return salt to the Bonneville Salt Flats. Intrepid has gone far beyond the minimum returning much more salt than the agreement requires. They trucked in the salt to the end-of-the-pavement area of their own volition and cost.)
Getting back to the story, I managed to find the deepest area and soaked the van and severely splashed the Charger. Then on to the pit area to get the car ready. I sacrificed some of my drinking water to clean the windows but much of the rest of the car was a total mess. At tech inspection I got two inspectors who , while good, didn’t really understand the 150 club rules. Taping up the sun roof seems a waste of good tape and left a bit of a mess on the roof. Their call on my wheel covers, while proper for a class car, didn’t really apply to my car. But I removed them anyway.
Back to the pits. The people parked next to me had some water in a spray tank and helped me get most of the salt splash off. By then it was 5 PM, they were running until 7 PM. I hopped in the van to see if it was even worth getting in line. It wasn’t. A Cadillac had crashed and the cleanup was taking a LONG time. So I ran to Wendover to grab a couple of things than back to the Bend-in-the-Road campground and just relaxed.
Friday Morning I was in line at 8:30 AM, about the place I would have been if I had been there Thursday evening. The timing system was the biggest problem, lots of down time for repairs. I am not involved with the timing at all, but I have a feeling the extra rain may have been a factor.
Five hours later I made my first run. We were told it was slippery so I took it easy, but traction was not as bad as I had envisioned. Around 120 the car was slipping side to side a lot but one has to just let the car do it’s thing. If you don’t, you are reacting to something that has already happened and it will only make matters much worse. The first run was 135 mph.
I managed to make two more runs, the last just before 7 PM. The results were a 140 and a 143.5mph.
Saturday the waits were not so long, but I only managed two runs, 139 and 140.
The car is not perfect, but it is close. However, there is not another 6mph to be had with the T! setup. I think it is good for 146-148 but no more. If I want to reach 150 mph in two miles I have to upgrade. I see no sense spending the time and money just to get to 146-148. At this time, I am planning on beginning work in November with completion in plenty of time for some open track time in April and the May Silver State Classic.
I am so grateful to the many people on the salt flats who became my supporters and helped me with snacks and especially water. (The car does not have any storage space and I don’t have a support vehicle with me.)
And a special thanks to David for helping r&r the engine.
Friday, September 25 the eBay Charger body was painted. I was hoping to have it on the road for the October Magna Cruise night then bring it to our October get-together but Reid has more work to do on it and he will be out of town Thursday-Sunday. On the road by the 19th of October is very likely. It won’t be finished, but it will be drivable and legal.
I haven’t been able to post this earlier, I have spent a LOT of time putting a protective coating on part of a 99 year old railcar at the Heber Valley Railroad. Got the worst section done Tuesday just before the storm came in. The rest will have to wait for spring
