Yeah I can understand how hard it is to get at the linkage, l-bodies have way too much stuff crammed into way to small a spot. I though it was bad when I popped off the linkage on my '87 Horizon when I was beating on it and it was tire hopping, I just had to drive it home in 2nd. Good thing it was only like 500 ft.
I want to convert my GLH to Heim joints after I put in a better trany. So does it help the shift feel after it is converted? Because now it feels all sloppy like.

You only need the rod linkage if you stay with the 525 tranny. If you switch to anything else, you need cables. 520/555 need one type of cables and 523/568 need another type. I'd put in a better tranny but don't want to cut a hole in the floor for the cables. It's not that big of a deal and my cars are far from mint, but I just don't want to alter them. (at least not now)
I don't know what the feel is like on the shifting. As it is, I only switched one joint. I was just trying to keep the car moving when I did it. In time, I'll probably change them all. Or at least most of them. I've driven Shelby Chargers and 87 GLHS's since 1988. So, I'm use to the lousey shifting. At least with the TI Charger, you had a bit of room to reach down and snap the rod back on if it popped off. But once they pop, they just keep getting worse.
The one I did on #784 a little over 2 years ago, was the end of the long rod that goes from the shifter toward the front of the car.

Here's a link to some Heim joints.

Yeah I don't want to cut my floor either when I swap trannies. So thats why I was thinking about Heim joints like Clayton did on his GLH. But, I guess that is a ways off yet. I still have other problems to fix.

Wow must have been having a brain fart, that was Tyler(Turbo224) that had the rod shifted 555 in his GLH with Heim joints. In his thread it said that Boosted made it for him.

That's a nice set-up. I wouldn't mind doing something like that on one of my GLHS's. Looks a bit complicated. I think I saw another thread once where there were a lot of detailed pictures of that set-up or a very similar one.
I wonder if doing that to a 568 is practical, or possible. I have a 568 that wants to be used.

Is a 568 that much different than a 555? If it would work it would be an awesome setup. I would hate to cut into your clean GLHS.

I don't know myself. I just know they use different cables and shifter. I bet if a guy was good enough to do a 555, he could do a 568. But then I really don't know what makes them tick. I've never looked at the levers and stuff on a tranny.

The way it looks, you could use almost the exact same setup on a 568 transmission. The 568 has the "side to side" shifter linkage on the top, but you can just leave that linkage dangle there and push/pull and twist on the other linkage like the pictures of the 555 show. If that makes any sense.
My 17 year old, 153,000 mile cable shifted 568 works and feels as good or better than that of most other cars out there that are much newer. I still remember the car magazines complaining about how cumbersome the IROC R/T's shifter was. That, and the spoiler hindered rearward vision. Its the biggest bunch of bologna I've ever heard before. They shift great and the car, even with the spoiler, has the greatest rearward vision of any car shy of my convertible with the top down.
That, and the Ford Aerostar made 1990 Motor Trend truck of the year, and we all know that the Aerostar was one of the biggest piles of crap to ever hit the road.

I have the FWD stuff posted from Mopars in the Park on the website. (May)In a few days I'll have the RWD and AMC stuff added too. There's just so much. I missed a few cars the first day and didn't get any of the "rice" cars. I'm sure you'd all understand.
