Isn't the 1.3L engine a toyota engine? I've been doing my research on the Geo's... look what I picked up last Friday:

I am not getting out of Turbododges yet...this is just a commuter car to save on fuel costs. Although curiosity about how much boost a 1.0L 3 cyl can hold up to can get the best of a person.

Paul, did the hail do that to the passenger fender also?
And about ever leaving Turbo Dodges. We'll track you down and drag you back. Like "The Eagles" said....."You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave"
J/K
Have you been driving that car? What kind of mileage? 5 speed?

I went to St. Paul last night after the St. Francis car show. I was sitting in the parking lot across from Wendy's and Arby's. A new Challenger pulled in and parked behind me. I should have pulled next to him and taken a few pictures. As it is, I got a few of his car. This one was the silver color. What a nice car. I've seen an orange one a few times on University. Probably the same one each time. The guy with the silver one said there aren't a lot of them out there yet.

I have only driven the Geo on the back roads around my house. Tabs are barely good yet and of course, no insurance on it and the car needs a fair amount of work done to it before it should be put on the road. The gas guage was way down, so I just filled it up at the local station and put 7.3 gallons in it at a cost of something like $27.50. It is a 10 gallon tank.

Also, it seems to have a burnt exhaust valve on cylinder #2. Its running on like 2.25 cylinders. The bottom end sounds pretty quiet though if you can tune out the misfire. The previous owner said it has been that way for the last 2000 miles and he got 40 mpg with it like that. He said the starter was bad because it would just do a rapid clicking while trying to start it. Hmmm.... lets just say that took like 3 minutes to fix.

The transmission upshifts perfectly to 2nd gear, but will not downshift to 2nd. Tires are like P155 80R 12. Radiator has almost no fins left in it. When you start it, it sounds just like dad's John Deere 318 garden tractor.

Lemme tell ya... when towing this thing home with the truck, you couldn't even tell that you were pulling anything. Because the car is so small, I could not easily see it on the dolly behind me as I towed it home in the late evening hours. There were a couple suspenseful moments where I thought the car came off of the dolly.

The hail damage is from.... I have no idea. It could have been recent, it could have been years ago. The driver's fender has much less hail damage on it. But the entire fender is basically shot anyway because it is on the verge of flappin in the wind. The frame is solid and with a tight powertrain with a working heater, this car is the ticket! Note the latches holding down the hood...

I was in a car show at Coon Rapids Chrysler today. Because of the tornado in Elk river, they sent everyone home. So, it was nice. Got there late, had a couple hotdogs and left early.
Anyone going to Anoka or St. Paul tonight? I hope the rain lets up and things dry off.
I thought I had the over-revving problem fixed last night. The car even started to boost properly. But that was short lived. On the way home from St. Paul, they R's started going up again. I'm thinking the boost problem is a sticking wastegate. The reason (and I really don't know about this stuff) is, when I force the boost with my horn (look back a ways if you don't know what I'm talking about) it seems like after that is when the boost works again. For a while. Does that sound plausible?<sp?

^^^ sweet car.

Bob, it is pretty easy to check for a sticking wastegate--just hook the air hose up to the vacuum line going to the actuator and watch the wastegate arm move as you apply compressed air to it.

Of course, you might want to turn down the pressure regulator somewhat.

As far as the idle goes... this may be stating something you already mentioned or already checked, but is there a chance the idle air control valve is malfunctioning? For the weekend, I have a Matco scan tool that I can hook up to see what the logic module is thinking. For instance, if the idle is up at 3000 RPM, and the logic module is commanding 100% idle air bypass, there is some other input telling it to do that for whatever reason. But if its at 3000 RPM idle, and the logic module wants only 10% idle air bypass, there is a fault somewhere in the idle air control circuit or the motor itself has issues.

I will be home all day Sunday right after church and may start yanking the drivetrain out of the Geo. (looks VERY easy to do!) I never hooked this scanner up to a Chrysler product this old, but if the diagnostic connector is the same as what your Sundance has, this scanner should talk to the logic module without a problem.

We'll also be able to use it to determine wastegate solenoid duty cycle. If the Logic module is commanding 0% duty cycle, it is intentionally trying to keep the boost down for whatever reason. Reason unknown. Call me if interested. I should be awake 'til 11:00 tonight.

Paul,

I just may do that tomorrow. As it is, I believe the wastegate is sticking. There was no boost all day today and at one point tonight, I forced it with the "Big Boost Button" (the horn) and afterwards, the boost was back.
What's the fix for a sticking wastegate? Oh yeah, the high idle stayed away today.

If you do verify that the wastegate is sticking, I think you can inspect the wastegate flap by removing the exhaust downpipe and looking into the swing valve... maybe. I can't recall ever trying to do that.

But, if the wastegate was sticking and causing the no-boost, it of course would be sticking open somehow. Hitting the horn-button bypass modification thing is somehow allowing the wastegate to close. It seems as though boost pressure is making it to the actuator, but is not bleeding off afterwards and the actuator itself is holding the wastegate open.

I believe the 1.0 to be a Suzuki and the 1.3 to be a Isuzu engine..
I mite be wrong, going off of memory (which isn't worth a crap)

I want a 96 or newer for the OBDII setup..

I borrowed a friends 97 Metro 1.0 hatch 5 speed and I pulled well over 54mpg..
and that was driving it quite spirited....

So when is your next meet at? got an address/time?
I mite be able to juggle things around a bit and make it.

We're meeting at the Car Craft car show (State Fair grounds) next weekend. I think Jim wanted to meet at the Dyno contest at 1pm Saturday. (Maybe watch my neighbor win it again) Jim, (Layaptch) our President, lives up by you. He's in Otsego, MN.

Hey everybody...

I dropped the price on the car...I replaced the leaking BOV with a straight pipe on Friday. Hooked up the scan tool and according the the computer the coolant sensor is reading -128deg, and the o2 sensor shows 0volts. However the temp guage works, and the scan tool froze up after about 10 seconds with a flash of "Code Fault Detected". No codes were present, and the car idled all goofy with the computer connected.

The car drove fantastic about 3/4 the way home, I down shifted to slow down coming down 169 to 81. Checked my rear view mirror to see a huge cloud of blue smoke! Guages were good, so I just figured I'de make it home. Light turned green and I accelerated and there was NO BOOST! So I can only assume that the turbo went.
I'm done with the car. I just have no ambition for it anymore and I want to get my '89 painted.

I'm taking a big loss, but $1500 takes it. I replaced the starter with the one from my '89, and the car still pops right off and runs great. My buddy still wants it, but I'm not going to fix it. He was going to do some checking to find someone else to fix it.
Car is worth more in parts, but I just don't want any more projects.
