The contenders:

JR 180lb
1996 Dodge Neon 4door
roughly 50,000 miles on a rebuild
2.0 SOHC 5spd 3.55fd
Crane 12 cam
K&N intake
MPx 55mm tb
MPx UDP
FastFabs longtube header
no cat, 2.25'' pipe into Magnaflow muffler
No AC No PS

Marty 240lb(fat kid)
1991 Dodge Daytona IROC
150,000 miles
2.5 T1 5spd 3.87fd
T2 IC and rad
2 piece intake mani
homemade cold air intake
gvalve set at 13psi
2.5'' dp into a 3'' side exit no cat no muffler

Ned(Me) 250lb(fat kid)
1991 Dodge Shadow ES Convertible
175,000 miles
2.5T1 5spd 3.77 fd
T2 IC and rad
MP stage 1 cal
gvalve set at 12psi
stock exhaust

All the runs were done from a 1st gear roll. 1st was the neon vs IROC. The Neon had no passengers, the Daytona had the me and Marty in it. Every one was dead nuts even until the end of 3rd gear when the IROC started pulling slowly on the neon. Needless to say I was VERY impressed with the Neon!

Next comes the Shadow vs the Neon. The first two runs it was me and Marty in the Shadow and JR still alone in the Neon. The Neon pulled a solid length and some change by the end of third! WTF?! So I then stuck Marty in the Neon with JR to balance the weight a bit. Next two runs my Shadow put about a length on the Neon by the end of third! Once again, very impressed by the lowly Neon SOHC!

We didnt get a chance to run the IROC and the Shadow because the MAP on the Tona crapped out. However I believe the IROC will handily whip the Shadow as is.

Now JR wants a MP ecu, ICEMAN intake, and a 3.98fd trans for his neon. Marty wants to go with a Cal, +20s, and about 18psi! Im getting a 2.5'' catback for the Shadow this weekend, but Im gonna wait on a fresh engine and a bigger turbo before I go for more boost!

A cutout raiser 16 psi and some +20 injectors and exhaust work would put bus lengths on that 2.0, i ran an 87 shelby z like that for years its still rockin today the only reason the guy i sold it to isnt drivin it is because he got too many tickets lol

Very nice Ned. I ran the K up against a newer sohc neon but it was automatic and stock so the outcome was quite obvious (left it like it was standing still in 5th). I'll be more than happy to run the K against the Shadow and Daytona next time I see you guys.

Sorry about the wrong gears on the Neon. Ive been out of 1gns since I sold my '96 twin cam 2yrs ago.

Yeah they are both still running the tiny Mitsu turbos, for now. I did have the gvalve set higher, but at 16psi I was staring to get detonation and figured Id turn it down until I had the fuel for it.

And Ariel, will run when the odds are a bit better! I heard youve got a big front mount on your K!

Yes, I have a big Mercedes M-Class 270D intercooler but we are working on fabbing up a nipple on it so a clamp and connector can be put on it. I have the g-valve as well but not going to install it till the intercooler is in. Right now I am running the stock staged boost of 12lbs controlled by the computer so it should be pretty even.

UPDATE: Well I got my compression bent 2.5'' exhaust with a HiFlo Cat and a Magnaflow muffler on the ShadVert and I tweaked the Gvalve for a solid 13psi.

I had a stoplight to stoplight run with a super clean '98 GT 4.6 5spd mustang, I put a full length on him before the next stoplight which was about an 1/8th mile or so. Needless to say I was feeling pretty confident about the ShadVerts capabilities after that and figured Id give the IROC a hard time.

Martys car has another mod I forgot about. I forgot about the hand ported head that Marty has on his Tona in the first post. He also tossed all the AC crap.

So we decide to run the two. We ran 3 times, each time from a first gear roll as usual. We both hit boost and spin through first, 2nd gear the IROC spins bad and the Shadvert only a little. The ShadVert pulls a nose but by the end of 2nd the IROC pulls it back! Shift to third and I jump the nose back instantly(it makes 14psi in 3rd-5th gear), then at about 5000rpm my Shad starts running out of breath the IROC not so much. It ends up putting a solid half a length on me by the end of third!

All three races had identical results!

I guess Im in the market for some +20s and a boost gauge that goes past 15psi! Im also gonna be tossin the non functional AC stuff(Convertibles dont need AC!), as well as getting a more efficient intercooler, or at least putting it where it can get some cold air!
