I was wondering if you guys could help me out with this one?
Do the turbo PT Cruiser and SRT-4 share the same 5 speed transmission?
If not is the PT tranny just as strong, and does it have the Quaife?

this will help at least a little:
the srt uses a transmission built by new venture while the pt (last i remember) uses a getrag unit. in 2004 the srt got the LSD but i never stayed up with the pt unit, it may or may not have one.

The PT turbo does not come with a quaife unit standard. From what I have heard it does not hold up well to significant increases in power, well at least compared to the SRT-4 NVG transmission.

The SRT-4 uses a New Venture T850 transaxle and the PT GT comes with a Getrag 288. The '04-05 SRT-4's got the Quaife ATB diff ('03 didn't) and the PT uses an open diff on all years but an aftermarket Quaife is available. The SRT-4's use a modular clutch assembly that combines the flywheel/disc/pressure plate in one assembly that bolts to a flex plate attached to the crank (similar to an automatic). The PT GT uses a dual-mass flywheel setup and there aren't as many different clutch upgrades as for the SRT-4. On the SRT-4 you can get aftermarket modular clutches (which use a different disc in an OEM Sachs setup), conventional setups that replace the flex plate/modular, and even twin-disc racing clutches. As for strength the T850 is pretty tough but has some issues and limitation (snap rings, shift forks and selector cover, bearings, input shaft, etc.) depending on things like torque input level, track usage, and so on. The Getrag may very well be a strong trans as well but looking at the PT boards and forums I haven't seen tons of people thrashing them to make a generalized statement on their abilities.

Wow Eric, Sounds like you know your stuff about these. I found some technical info on here. They some some links at the bottom of the pages that bring up the specifications about the SRT-4 in pdf format.

These are all good points! Another thing to consider is that a PTs suspension is not really engineered for high performance racing, Rally, or Drifting. The PTs standard FWD, lack of Anti-Role Bars (aft 2003), and Twist-Beam Rear suspension limit a PT's ability to handle the extra stress that comes with prolonged racing. You can upgrade your Turbo, but then you will have to make changes to you transition, and suspension. It is all part of the same system. As a 'Touring” PT owner It would be cheaper to build my own SRT than it would to make the required changes (to rally, drift, street race) for my PT. On the other hand, the PT has a great suspension for its intended use.

You will be amazed how much abuse the tranny will take, true its not as good as the srt4. If you know how to drive a 5spd, you should have no problems at all.

Head over to www dot PTCrew dot com and you should find all teh info you need about the trannies. Also youll see there are a few of us that race the cruisers also.
