How well do these engines do with an open air PCV system?

I'm still fairly new to this engine, so I was wondering if anyone runs these engines with an open air PCV system, and how well this works? I once tried this on my 2.0l sohc ford escort engine and although a few buddies on feoa.net did this as well I think it caused a lot of gasoline buildup in my oil and I also wore out my rings pretty quickly (maybe the rings were the reason I had buildup and not the pcv?). My 2.4 engine already came without the egr (do any of them have it?) which I usually remove on every vehicle I work on because I hate the carbon buildup and extra complexities involved. Reading stories here about PCV valves failing and boost going through the crankcase also doesn't sound like fun (although I haven't turbocharged yet).

I guess I haven't seen any open-air setups now that you mention it.... what I have seen is using a catch can before the valve itself and a second one from the breather on the valve cover to the intake. Definately make sure that this is in fact hooked up to your intake as it will help clear the crankcase pressures and vapors.

I'm sure the g-pop shop will verify that if a standard breather alone is used, it will generally lead to premature turbo failure from the excess crankcase pressures finding their way up the oil return line from the turbo and causing excess oil pressure there. I know some turbo companies recommend a check valve on the oil return for this reason. The excess pressures can also reek havoc with your rings over time as well.

Probably didn't answer your Q, but good info anyway I think.

That was pretty good information, I didn't think of it that way before. The only problem I thought this would create was oil contamination from blowby gasses but now I see another potential risk. Although I'm still very itchy to try this hehe, I'm a minimalist freak, even if certain things aren't that troublesome they bug me quite a lot sometimes.
