I have a few 2.2 alternators at the shop and I was wondering if they would work on my 2.4L swap? My block is a turbo pt block. I currently have a bunch of parts getting powder coated right now ( including the alternator brackets) So I was not sure if it would line up or if I should make it easy and just go buy the correct alternator?
If it'll fit on the bracket, yeah, you can do it. Using the PT setup, you're going to have the alternator where the power steering should be. I prefer to use the Stratus accessory setup. This puts the power steering pump in the correct place for TD's (you'll have to clearance the frame rail a bit to clear the pulley), puts the alternator up front, and the AC compressor up front/down low. It also uses a much wider belt on the alternator, so you don't have issues with it constantly slipping.
I ran it for awhile, I didn't clearance the frame rail, so the pulley rubbed and since it's plastic, it ended up shattering. That was annoying as a piece of it went into the timing belt (no covers on it) and made it skip a few teeth. So I was on the side of the road putting the timing belt back in the correct place. heh.. PITA. Make sure it doesn't rub.
I like having the alternator away from the hot exhaust system. I think that's the primary reason why Neons go through so many alternators (followed by the fact it's a lame Mitsu alternator).
But.. It might be nice to have the alternator in back, to keep it out of the way of the intercooler hoses up front.
Thought I would throw these on here. Today I got my stuff back from powder coat so I mocked a few things up. Here is a spare TD alternator from one of my omni's mounted on rear (exhaust side) alternator mount. I'm not sure if I'm going to use this rear mount but thought I would post it for educational purposes.
I used a stock 2.2 Bosch alternator stuffed in a Caravan bracket up front. The factory wiring harness is the perfect length to use it there. Also, like Una said, having the alternator up front keeps it away from all the heat.
