i know that the intakes for our cars dont do anything so is it possible to just remove the air intake itself and just put the filter on the turbo?

Putting a filter on the turbo will work ok. It will suck in more air than thru the stock airbox, but the downside is that it will be hot air from the engne compartment rather than the cooler air from out in front of the car that the stock sytem tries to grab.

FWIW, on summer days, my CSX ran better with a K&N drop in filter in teh stock airbox than with a K&N cone in teh engine compartment. Now I have the cone out in front in cooler air and it works better yet.

I would guess that with the srt's stock intercooler running the air filter directly on the turbo would result in at least 15deg higher charge temp.
My advice: stock air box w/ k+n, or if you absolutely feel the need for an intake go with a cold air style (which the stock airbox is anyway...). Just for kicks i was goofing around with a scan tool watching intake temp vs timing advance, i didn't note ambient temp , but it should give you an idea of why cone directly on the turbo on an srt might not be the greatest idea.
intake charge temp / timing advance
run 1
75 deg / 30 deg
79 deg / 26 deg
88 deg / 24 deg
run 2
81 deg / 26 deg
84 deg / 24 deg
93 deg / 23 deg
run 3
88 deg / 25 deg
93 deg / 23 deg
97 deg / 22 deg

i know that colder the air is better, but would only using a filter on the turbo bring air in quicker...and thanks bill2 for the listing on charge temp/timing advance

The only thing it might do is spool minutely quicker.

well i pulled the filter off and ran it that way for just last nite cause i was cleaning all the parts of the engine, one by one. wow! that turbo will screen very very loud and the mopar bov is extreamly loud. but it did spool up faster, but the noise level for everyday use is too loud, but takeing it off going to the track, ill try and see if there is a different in times for the quicker spooling.

You may get 1-2 runs in if it's better before the enforcer (The pcm) adapts and makes it run same as stock again. The computer in these cars is a warden at a maximum security prison.

Don't bother, just get the K&N CAI kit, it's only about $200 from us at FWD-P.
It plumbs the filter to outside in front of the drivers wheel.
Putting a filter right on the turbo just sucks up hot air from the engine.
Also the K&N kit comes in Blue, polished, silver or red.
later,
Cindy

The reason I ask is I'm putting an SRT motor in my 2000 neon and it didn't come with all the piping for the intake. And I've put alot more money into an after-market intercooler and other significant performance mods while the engine is still out.
