I got the noise that no one wants to hear in my 93 iroc r/t . The dreaded rod knock! I am going to rebuild and already have the radiator, all hoses, all wiring unhooked and out of ther car. What is the best way to pull the engine..tranny and engine? , just engine? ,.... I know there have to be shortcuts and i would like to use them! Any help is appreciated and cindy i will see you next week.

I'd remove/install with engine/trans together right out the hood. Seemed easy enough to me.

I suggest going to harbor freight and getting a Engine Leveler if you don't already have one. Because, whether you take it out the top or bottom, you are going to need to tilt the engine/trans and the leveler is safer and easier for tilting the load.

Suggestion; Before you go to all the work of pulling the engine, check the balance shaft chain. If the tensioner/keeper on the chain goes bad, it can have a sound very simlar to a rod. Just a thought.

Depending on what all you are doing to the engine, it can be done with the block still in the car...

Otherwise, I've done these both ways...up and down that is. IMO down is easier, especially if you are doing it by yourself (see tyingbe's picture). Up can be done, but getting the engine and trans through is a little tight, and I had the hood off when I did it.

And pull both the engine and trans.

i have pulled over 20 engines/trans from my tds for service and all the parts cars i have had over the years, i always pull the head/engine/trans together from the top.

i have even left the hood on with minivans, shadows and 1st gen daytonas. you'll want to pull your hood off though.

i have never had the luxury of a engine leveler either, it would help, but if you dont have one, just have more slack on the trans side of the chain so that the trans is lower than the motor. the only thing you will need a second person for is pumping the cherry picker while you guide the engine so you dont catch the crank pulley (if you leave it on) once the pulley is clear of the frame you can guide it more to the pass side and the trans will clear the frame on the driver side.

the hardest thing usually (for northern guys) is the down pipe to swingvalve bolts, they get rusted together as one piece and then the sawzall comes into play. but your in texas, so they should just unbolt like my TN. R/T.

as far as other tips on yanking it out, just work your way around with the top of the engine with a screwdriver, 10, 13 and 15mm wrench and sockets disconecting everything in the way, then hop under neath the car and do the same thing.
pull the 32mm wheel nuts off the axles with the car on the ground, then pull the wheels, you can get away with just seperating the lower strut bolts and ball joints and turning the rotor assembly by hand untill you get enough room to pull the half shafts out and then pull them from the trans. undo the motor mounts once you have the cherry picker attached and your ready to pull.

its as easy as it sounds.

as far as going from the bottom, i would never consider it based on that you have to unhook all of the same stuff, plus squeeze it between the k frame if you leave it bolted up. the 4 bolts on the hood are easy and its easier to roll a car backwards with the engine above then it is to slide a whole engine and trans out from underneath a raised car.

I take the longblock and tranny out attached at the same time out the top with the hood removed. I recommend a load leveler if you're taking the powertrain out by yourself, but if you have the aid of an assistant, it's not really required.

On the passenger side, I just wrap a chain around the upper passenger side motor mount and for the driver side, I take out the top two tranny bolts and bolt the chains to those bolts.

Number one and three rod bearings were shot! Pistons are ok... I am going to mic the cylinders and see what i need to do. I am thinking what is my time worth? For $1600 i can get a shortblock with venolia pistons ready to go from cindy and i only live 20 miles from her...but i love the satisfaction of building my own engine and it will probably be a little cheaper... but again what is my time worth? What do you guys think?

only you can answer what your time is worth, i usually have more time than money like most people here, but if i had the money i would pay to get it done for me and use my time installing it. you get a good feeling whenever something comes in the mail for you and you open it and its all shiny and pretty, right?
