But see.....with a stock car and 3" (catless) exhaust and 13 psi boost, my car trapped around 106-108 mph. And, Pat Culkin's TIII was stronger as I think he trapped something over 110 mph with essentially the same setup.
So....if you havent figured it out already....I think stock is damn trick!

Thats another story.....if youre dealing with a pile of metal to start with, it might not cost all that much more to do a few extra things. And, if your bores are toast and you cant use stock pistons, thats going to be a big cost right there since Mahles arent available in anything other than stock size.

I think a well set up stock turbo'd R/T is a blast. I love the low end power and the instant hit of boost when you hit that magical RPM right before 3k RPM where you get sucked into the seat. I like it more than the .57 trim on my red R/T (granted it is not tuned and running a stock computer with larger injecters...). Now that I am swapping the turbo on my white R/T which had a stock turbo, I am a little affraid it won't be as fun to drive. Hopefully I won't burn through so many tires this summer though.

I agree RJ......a well sorted stock turbo'ed TIII is as fast as 99% of the cars out there and a hoot to drive.
The "problem" is that none of us are ever satisfied...we want more more more! Its a sickness and should be classified as such!

why does it seem like so much more work to get a sub 12 sec car out of a r/t that is capable of mid 14's stock? i would think with 500whp and some slicks you should be able to net low 11's at least. what is the biggest bottle neck after you got a big exhaust, ic and turbo?

TRACTION!!!!! remember its FWD
The way I see it there is only what 1 car in the 10sec club thats a 5spd?, so the Driver Mod is also a limiting factor.
many use 25.4x8.0/5 slicks, and they become very touchy in a high powered car, 26" slicks are recommended, its been done with 24.5's but you have to have it dialed in(meaning driver mod, good boost switching, suspension and weight distribution)
If you want to know how to do it look at Dean's Rampage it was the lowest HP car to go 10's last I knew, I plan to be the 1st Spirit in the 10's if I get off my butt

I would guess that you are about right on low 11's with 500 whp...I doubt it would be much better. Its hard to get this big boats moving and traction is a problem. If I had to guess, Id think the trap speed for a 500 whp car would probably be something approaching 130 mph though. I would suspect it would be certainly north of 125 mph (as my car trapped 117 mph with 360ish whp).
Of course...you get diminishing returns once the speeds get up there though (as these cars are not exactly aerodynamic)

speedeuphoria: i wish you best luck and would meet ya at the track to sit back and video tape it for you.
i understand the tracion being issue, but if you played with it on 4 individual tire scales and did some old school trickery with weight transfer, it can only improve.
none of these cars are aerodynamic with the exception of a daytona or j body maybe, but if a van can go 10-11secs so can a spirit!!!
wieght reduction would help alot too, but who wants to gut a spirit r/t or iroc r/t??

Heres a datalog of the stock TIII computer. There was a MAP diode limiting the computer to "seeing" 13 psi boost.

And heres the stock cal versus a more agressive one that I ran for awhile. This one was great for lower boost pressures as the car was very "snappy" driving around town.

I would have to say that looks very similar to what I was getting with my map fooled at about the same level. My zeitronix wont datalog my timing advance, but my buddy was watching it, and the lowest it dipped was 22 and that was over 6k.
What were you using to datalog the timing Larry? otc?

Just a laptop and what is called a DB-9 cable from the OTC to the laptop. OTC sells this cable....and one can make one if they are familiar with cables, etc. I cant recall where I bought mine at
