I think I have come to the conlusion with the help of 4sfed4 that my cam timing might be retarded a tooth. I dont really notice it but I do notice that when I am starting the car from a dead stop I have not enough power and I end up riding the clutch to get the car up to speed. Once it gets past a certain pointe it will start moving strong it might even be when the turbo is fully spooled and its just the boost making the cam retard seem non existant.

When I got mine back from the dealer in '93 from the head replacement. The cams were out of time. It would only make 7psi of boost, max. I just cranked on the wastegate to get back to 11psi. It wasn't until a couple years later when the timing belt snapped that I figured it out. Once I had it back together and took it for a spin, boost shot up so fast it scared me Backed off the wastegate to 15psi and was a happy camper.

FWIW, driving the car you would never know there was a problem. Even the couple of dealers I took the car to back then said there was no problem and it was normal. Only difference was it didn't make the 11psi of boost it did with the original head. Even gas mileage was same.

I have a similar situation. The previous owner told me that my short block was replaced under warrantee when the intermediate shaft failed. Whoever must have done the work didn't get the timing right. It was a slug pulling away from a stop and didn't pull until over about 3000rpm. We recently replaced the leaking headgasket and installed a new timing belt. What a difference! It's like a new car! I now have good low end power and tons of mid-range pull! The car had probably been that way for half it's life as it now has 77000 miles.

What are different ways on checking the timing on a Turbo 3 motor?

Can a timing Light find a problem if the belt is not placed on right?
