I was thinking of doing the same thing but I plan on doing it next year while I am in school. I was thinking that I could buy a t3 bottom end and rebuild it so there would be less down time and I would just have to switch the bottom ends out...

I just really want to know everything about my car and learn how to work on it. So far it has definitly been interesting, but I am learning as I go.

I would say go for it, but I can only imagine how fast you can burn through money when rebuilding one of these T3s.

I just went down that road and I'm still down it....sorry to say...
First off yes you are going to need money and a lot of it, as the parts you will need cost money. Contact me if you need help finding stuff. 2 Get a well-trusted machine shop to do your work, as the most likely never worked on a 2.2 T3 before, and you will get most of your parts from Cindy @ FWDPermance.com. I bought my car dead and blown up, you name it was almost all replaced. (Well not everything)
It took me a year to rebuild it and I just got my Daytona on the road this last Saturday to spin off the gear of my intermediate shaft to my oil pump. Not even 16 miles on my rebuild. Can you hear me cry? Parts are coming by Friday. I'm not too happy about that

What I did:
Block: bored and honed .020 over acid dipped and painted and inspected and new freeze plugs. New bearings. Ect… Crank turned and resurfaced and balanced
Venolia Forged Pistons (.020)
Custom made rods from new 2.5 L turbo rods
Custom made, multi layer gasket (.067) (FWD)
Head: Inspected and resurfaced New German lifter set (FWD) all else was fine.
New gaskets and seals all around
Vacuum manifold + Re-did all vacuum lines with red silicone (FWD)
New Stock turbo rebuild T3 (FWD)
New Belts (factory dealer)
New timing belt tensioned and idler pulleys (factory dealer)
New sensors here and there
New oil pump and now another new oil pump + I- Shaft
New K&N air filter
Front mount Spearco Intercooler same one from FWD
Hoses and pipes for IC and turbonetices elbows from (http://www.roadraceengineering.com)
Two new tires for the front
Auto-meter Boost gauge and temp gauge (for now)
New full size radiator and new stainless steal overflow tank
Hardware stainless nut and bolts (local hardware store)
Brand new twin cam turbo iroc side emblems (mine are cracked)” This is the key to the power of these cars”
Cost unknown but around 4G thinking lost track

Just to get her running again, at least your cars work, I think??
I hope this helps somewhat

Chris
P.S. Thank you for all your help Wallace, I’ll keep you posted.

i should have just done a rebuilt when i did the head gasket last october, but oh well. i want to build it to go, new pistons, hybrid turbo, spearco ic, injectors, map sensor, computer, all the goodies. go along and replace all the gaskets/seals all around, vac lines. i just had the head re surfaced a bit and checked out with new seals and stuff when i did the head, so that stuff should be fine, have the fwd head gasket + arp head studs, so those dont need to be replaced. have a new high flow oil pump waiting to go in, brand new oil pan sitting here too. i hope i get to do it

Chris,
Glad you found a solution to your radiator problem (by adding a bigger intercooler, and going with the t-1 large radiator instead) Did you tell your folks that? .......hey Mom, I can't get a radiator for the R/T so I will need a big honking IC instead....LOL
Later,
Cindy
