What do you all think about this?
This is from the Porsche website where they are explaining their new "variable turbo geometry".

"The 911 Turbo offers a revolutionary solution to this dilemma. Its win inter-cooled turbochargers feature the application of Variable Turbine Geometry (VTG). With Variable Turbine Geometry, the exhaust flow is channeled into the turbines by way of electronically adjustable guide vanes. By changing the angle of these vanes, the system can replicate the advantages of a small turbo at low rpm, and a larger turbo as the tachometer climbs.

While this technology has been used in diesel engines since 1996, Porsche uses Variable Turbine Geometry for the first time in the new Turbo. The system is capable of handling the significantly hotter exhaust from a gasoline engine by using heat-resistant materials first developed for aerospace."

italics are mine for emphasis.

sounds an awful lot like the VNT our cars have, doesn't it?

Playing The Devil's Advocate... Maybe they mean for the first time in a Porsche. A major company like that has to know that the technology has been around for ages. Just my $.02 though.

yeah they didn't state it was the 1st for a gas car like the magazines did. But I would think since there's 2 of them on a 3.6 liter motor that they're probably simarily sized as ours unfortunately. Now BMW Diesels use a VNT that might be larger and the same vane style.

Just got back from SoCal. You guys might of read of the Crystal Cove car show in R&T mag. It's awesome. Anyway there were plenty of VNT 911's there. The vanes are vacuum aperated. Albiet with only 1 vacuum line that I could see. They don't look any larger than ours but the exhaust outlet is much better designed. The inlet to the exhaust housing looks smaller as well. It might be a direct replacement size wise and the wheels might be newer designs as well but I can't say for sure as I was just looking under the car.

Well, Mercedes has a 6 cyl. with a VNT in it. The snail sits right on top of the mototr and has like almost 300lb/ft. I saw it at the Miami Auto Show last night.

Mayby what the article meant to say was

"While this technology has been used in diesel engines since 1996, Porsche uses Variable Turbine Geometry for the first time in a car that's actually fast."

I KID! I KID!

Seriously, the way it's worded it sounds more like Porsche is using it for the first time, rather than it being used for the first time on a car. I wonder if the diesel truck VNT's would work well on a 2.2/2.5? Mayby twins on a 5.0...

It does specify that it's the first time "Porsche" uses it.

Dead thread, but yeah, I remember the Mercedes display at the auto show that went on about their revolutionary turbine design... I took one look, and wondered if Daimler's buying of Chrysler earned them the right to re-write Mopar history...
But as the thread seems to be leaning, I'll agree that if there's more interest in this technology, someone might make something that could be used as an upgrade for those so inclined.
