How long did you drive it before checking the compression becaues it will take a few miles for the rings to seat and the compression to come up. Good luck with the car. Jason

The bottom end has 20k on it,all I did was put on the new turbo, ported intake, ported exhaust, ported head with new lifters and springs with back cut valves and and a new valve grind.Used the old cam that has almost 20k on it too.Shoulda just did everything right the first build but didn't want to spend that much but now it's to late and have to go all the way now.I would have actually saved money in the long run.

Not sure how you lost compression in 20K, unless you were boosting real high, broke a ring, or cracked a piston from detonation. Here is a thought, if your valves were not lapped you could have some valves that are not seating right since you have a fresh valve grind.

I think I will pull the head first and get it checked because that was my first thought as well because it ran good before I took everything apart. But would it cause blowby because the oil dipstick is pushing out now. Also the oil cap and pvc are blowing hard which I could see happening.Anyhow I'll check the head first before I take everything out again.

No, if a valve was not seating it would blow pressure into the intake or exhaust not the crankcase. Sounds like rings or cracked piston, pull the valve cover and make sure the valves are closing. I do not think that is your problem though. Something is not right, since you also had the valvetrain noise. I would pull the valve cover, then the head and go from there. I feel for you, I have to pull my head again. My new head had a bad cam bore and the cam was binding bad, so I ended putting the stock head on so I could drive it from Phoenix to South Dakota when I moved. Got the new head line bored and ended trailering the car for the move anyway. Good luck.

What did you find when you cracked open the bottom end?

Watching with interest; making plans for a build on my newly acquired 90 VNT Daytona....

Ironbird720,

So did you have the stock cast pistons in your engine? Did the level of boost you were running cause the problem with the top ring(?) And it looks like (based on this thread) you were running 18 lbs, with spiking to 20-22? Is that accurate?
