In 1988 Chrysler went to the 1 piece intake manifold- Identical to the TI piece in every respect except it was painted black and had a charge air sensor installed, also the TII engines continued to use a Garrett turbo unlike their TI counterparts. The VNT was originally designed to be used on a 1.5-1.8 liter engine and had to spin at 179,000 rpm's to provide 12 psi of boost for a 2.2- by comparison a TII Garrett does the job at only 140,000 rpm.
Not to hijack the thread, but according to what you are saying...

a VNT car isn't the best choice for a performance build because you would be swapping out the turbo anyway. A TII or TIII equipped car would suffice due to the forged internals.

Sooo...I need to find a TII-TIV Lebaron from 1990 and up for a good project?

What years could I get a 5spd?

Im pretty sure the 5 sp came in T2,T3 and T4 standard no automatic.some people hate the VNT some like it,I dont know much about them I have heard you can beef them up but there tricky ,if you open up the exhaust the turbo will over boost so that would be a thread you would need to start cause like I said I dont know much about it I have heard good things and bad about them,and what I posted came from allpar.com thats not my words he wanted to know about the internals so I found it and copy/pasted it for him to read

VNT turbos do not scare me as I deal with them while working on Mercedes Benz cars/diesel SUVs (VVT-Variable Vane Turbos). I just don't plan on using one. I figure I will use a T3 or T3/T4 hybrid along with upgraded injectors, MAP, ECU, exhaust, portwork, etc. I am just looking for a nice J body coupe with a 5 speed and T2 or better powerplant. I just need more info on what years and option packages I need to be watching for to achieve my goal. I figure the higher on the "T" scale I go, the better foundation I will have formy project.

I may start a new thread for this since I am a newb to these cars and have a lot to learn. I know the Conquest/Starion Mitsu 2.6 powerpalnt inside and out, but the Chrysler products are still Greek to me.

I have a had a couple of cars offered to me via Pm and have seen a few on the F/S board, but I need to learn more about values before deciding if the prices are right for what I am doing. i.e.=

I have one car offered for $2000 that is an '87 Lebaron TI automatic with about 150k miles and is pretty clean with gray leather and factory paint. It is also about 10hrs away from me.

On the other hand I saw a '90 TIV VNT5spd Lebaron GTC that is loaded but needs a litle work for $1200 and it runs. That one is about 12hrs from me. It seems to be more of what I need with the TIV engine, but I would probably want to swap everything to a straighter body.

Then there is a convertible that is a GTC and has the TII engine, but I don't want a convertible. I would have to swap everything again to a coupe body.

Dilemmas...

take your last 9 digits in your VIN and give them to any MOPAR dealer parts Dept and they'll run it and give you a read-out of all the stuff your car came with

1986 T2's (GLHS's) were basicly modified T1s and had cast cranks. There were some T2s that came with automatics, 87 Shelby Lancers and Masi. TCs. TIVs were basicly T2s with the different turbo and had counter balance shafts. In stock form I would bet on a vnt car, not by a whole lot but still. Theres not a whole lot of use for the stock vnt for anything much over stock hp. Hope that helps.
