No one knows how to decode VNT's in a 1990 Daytona VIN?

Thanks dingles9,

I saw that, but I don't know how that tells me if it's a vnt? There's no code option for the vnt, just a 2.2 turbo or efi... am I missing something?

I don't know much about the VNT's but i did notice that they have a weird airbox.

VNT

TII

Now that might not only be on the VNT's i forget.

Thanks guys, I'll check the airbox and the vac lines.

What confuses me about the 8th digit being a "C" is that the decoder I read in a Chilton manual for Daytona's of this year says that "C" is a turbo 2.2l and that's all it says. (It doesn't differentiate turbos in the code)

I thought that Daytona's that year had the turbo II's and the VNT's as options, so I was hoping one of the decoders would have the vnt as a seperate letter not just lumping all the turbos together with a "C"... if that make sense.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate your help!

Don't go by the airbox, '90 vnt cars ('89 VNT CSX's used the 89 style TII airbox) and '90-'92 2.5 TI's shared the same, new for 1990, common airbox, the intercooler piping went under instead of through the airbox starting in 1990 and ultimately ending in 1990 for the US production 8v intercooled turbo cars..
If it is a 5 spd 1990 Shelby Daytona most likely it is a VNT car unless someone switched it over.

Where is the VIN number located on the engine? I have picked up a motor that was supposed to be a VNT without the turbo. So I am having a hard time knowing if it is a VNT with forged internals or a regular Turbo 2 motor.

Im still looking but have you checked out this site on the left look for turbo data base and click on number 07. Short Block, what's hot and what's not it might help a little at least until I can find the site

this still isnt what I was lookin for but I hope it helps

In 1988 Chrysler went to the 1 piece intake manifold- Identical to the TI piece in every respect except it was painted black and had a charge air sensor installed, also the TII engines continued to use a Garrett turbo unlike their TI counterparts. In 1989 Chrysler introduced the common block TII engine which carried over the TII engines bulletproof internals now housed in a much stiffer, stronger block. In late 1989 (Shelby- CSX) and 1990 (Chrysler- Daytona, Shadow, Lebaron) you could buy a TURBO IV- Basically a 1989 Turbo II motor with a Variable Nozzle Turbocharger. The 2.2 VNT was a great concept in reducing lag but it cost more then a regular TII setup and there was numerous control issues. The final nail in the coffin was that with minor software changes the 2.5 TI produced just about as much torque and hp as the 2.2 VNT but without the intercooler and fancy expensive Garrett VNT turbo. The VNT's biggest dirty little secret was that it made less hp then last years TII- 162 hp vs. 174 hp. The VNT was originally designed to be used on a 1.5-1.8 liter engine and had to spin at 179,000 rpm's to provide 12 psi of boost for a 2.2- by comparison a TII Garrett does the job at only 140,000 rpm.
