What do you guys think of Mahle 513140-020 pistons for a vnt daytona??

These are the pistons that came with the car I just bought, the engine is out right now and these are in a box that came with it, the previous owner was going to put them in during rebuild.

Are these cast or forged, I'm having a hard time finding info on them on the internet.

Any thoughts would be appreciated, I'm not a piston expert.

Good point.

My goal is to squeek out about 200 horse all said and done and have it as a daily driver on nice days in the summer. So reliability trumps ultimate performance for me with this particular car.

I'm not going to drag race it, but I might take it to the strip just for fun here and there...

Seems like they're stock replacement, which means cast pistons.
Will be fine for what you want them to do.

It's a floating pin 87-90 2.2L TII, TIV OEM replacement piston, I'm guessing it's a .20 over by the last part of the part number, but I'm not sure. They are the best cast pistons you can get, and currently are not available from Mahle anymore.

Thats what I'm running in my rebuild right now and there fine but if you have the extra $500 go with forged pistons. For your setup these will work just fine.

So would you keep these if you wanted 200 horse and reliable, or would you suck it up and get forged pistons?

I don't want to have to rebuild the engine for quite a few years...

Thanks for the input guys!

p.s. just saw your post ironbird as my reply posted. I don't really want to drop $500 unless it's warranted. A couple of you guys now have said that the mahles should be fine so I think I'll go forward with them, I just had read that forged should be used.

It really depends on how you go about making 200 HP. If you make the top end flow with port work and good exhaust then they will be fine, if you just crank the boost up they will break. With that said get in contact with Todd Nelson, he can help you make the power you want dependably. I will PM you his info.

Hey topdollar,

That's exactly it, I would like to build hp through some fine-tuning of the ports and a more open exhaust. I feel like the end result would be more hp but it wouldn't hurt reliability like tweaking the turbos might (at least for me, I don't feel comfortable doing this myself).

I'm running a 16psi cal with these pistons and spiking at 18-20 psi with no problems. You just have less room for error when running cast pistons.Save your $500 and get a Stage 3 cal with +20's and a 3 bar map and you will get 200hp with no problems.I wish I went with forged pistons now because I've done many more mods then I expected with the car. This is called the boost bug. You'll get it too probably,I think everyone does, especially if it's your first TD.lol.So if your going to change your plans for the car down the road and keep modding it spend the extra $500 and get forged pistons especially if your going to rebuild the motor anyways.
