Yeah Illusional, and sometimes they blow up. LOL. Mine cracked apart interanlly and caused the turbo to overspin and fail. Sometimes upgrading a part is not just for performance. The life of a turbo that costs double that of TII is a great thing to save.

Only the '90 VNTs got a blow off valve from the factory. The '89s didn't.

A leaking BOV, or a leak anywhere in your plumbing can lead to turbo failure. In the event of a leak, the turbocharger wastegate will not open (or the vanes on a VNT will not open) because max boost is not easily or ever obtained. The turbo will continue spooling to try and achieve the max boost, eventually over spinning. This could lead to failure. In the case of a VNT, it's already spinning very fast. The Garret VNT-25 was designed for a max displacement of 1.8 liters, but Chrysler went ahead and used it on their 2.2 liter engines. That's not bad in itself, but when you get guys cranking up the boost more, it spins the VNT ever faster. More then 15 psi will destroy the seals. So, yes, it is possible to over spin a turbo, either due to a leak, or plain stupidity.

You forgot one other point Shelby VNT, It could also happen because of both. LOL. I had mine trying to push 14psi then the BOV went and never really did quick sounding off. It just sounded different, being old itself it did not take long after that before it went.

Illusional,
I am hoping to never need another since I am leaving it at stock boost. I doubt there are more than 25 - 35 Drop top Lebarons left out there with the VNT motor and I want mine to stay intact.
