Just a quick question,

My dad and I just removed and disassembled the engine out of my Bro's 2.2 VNT Daytona, and we noticed that there was balance shafts installed on the 2.2.

Casting date seems accurate with year of car (89). There's some evidence of work being done to the bottom end, but aside from that, everything is factory specs (less than 90,000 KMS on the odometer)

Did the 2.2 VNT's came with balance shafts? I thought only 2.5's came with them (longer stroke).

BTW, the engine killed a rod bearing, split it in 4! odd for a very low km, highly maintained engine!

Thanks.

Seb

The VNT Daytona came with a 2.2 that has balance shafts. As far as I know that is the only 2.2 that had them. Mike

I am putting a 2.2 VNT motor into my '91 Spirit. Has anyone removed the balance shafts and did it affect the motor in any way?

I removed mine three years ago. Runs fine, just more vibration at idle.

Does the VNT 2.2 come with a 2.5 oil pan though since it has balance shafts?

I removed the vbalance shafts and plugged the oil journal when we blue printed and balanced a 90 2.2L VNT motor and it runs like a swiss watch.

I know the pan is larger than a non B-Shaft set up, this another benifit to removing the shafts More oil capacity. Mine held 7 qts. Make sure you put in some sort of baffle to control the sloshing oil though.

I removed them on my VNT Shadow 3 months ago. I hadn't run the car in 3 years, but it doesn't seem any rougher than my other VNT Shadow I have that still has the shafts (until I pulled the motor a year ago;-).

Being a 2.2, the difference is minor to none at all... but on a 2.5, I would say it has to be noticeable, but not annoying.

Forgot to mention.... use Cliff Ramsdell's procedure as it will not make chips that can destroy your engine if doing this service with the engine in the car.

I don't have the link, but try a search for Mopartek and Cliff Ramsdell on this forum, or on gogle or something and you'll find his webpages on this and many other things, too.

http://www.hometown.aol.com/mopartek/balanceplug.html. I used this method. Pretty darn easy!

Thanks Cliff
