Oil return line leaking

My VNT is leaking oil where the oil return line connects to the turbo. It appears that the o-ring on the return line is bad and needs replacing. It is a high temp o-ring. Unfortunately, the o-ring does not come with the new return line. It is a separate part number. My dealer says the o-rings are back ordered and may no longer be available. Anyone know where I might find one or have another idea? Thanks. JB

Don't know what to tell you. I remember replacing mine 6 years ago and it still leaked. Carwas in limbo for the past 3 years until just recently. Still leaking! Hehe. I am not so sure mine is actually leaking at that oil return tube, but possibly somewhere's from the center section. I would try an o-ring from CRAPA. Size one up when you bring the tube in. I remember the new one had a tight fit on the tube, not loose, BTW. I just don't think it's a special high temp o-ring, but that was in the back of my mind 6 years back and why I spent 5 times the price for it at the dealer.

Make sure whatever you do... donot use high temp silicone sealant. I know someone who lost their turbo doing this as it worked it's way in the drainback tube. The drain back is simply that.... drains from gravity, not being forced via pressure. So the slightest restriction and it will end up blowing oil through the seals.

Hope this helps.

Be sure to keep in mind that flange the bolt goes through over time tends to warp or bend. You should check this very closely before re-installing everything. Mine was bent just enough that you could not see it but with a straight edge it was very noticeable. If you do not get that straight you will never get a proper seal at the O-ring. Good luck.

It's a poor design with one bolt holding it onto the turbo. It also has the tube sticking up past the flange surface partially entering the center section. Wouldn't think it being warped a tad would affect it, but obviously it did to your's.

Last one I ordered from the dealer fit too loose and I ended up getting one at the auto parts store from their universal ones. They not only fit better than the dealer one but don't leak as much. There is nothing special about them.

Thanks for the responses guys. I never thought to check the drain back for warpage. I will order a new one and install a new o-ring on it. Maybe that will fix the problem. Anyway thanks again. JB

I'm having oil leakage underneath as well since I replaced my turbo.I think it is my tube as well but it's hard to say considering everything is caked in oil. There is a o-ring around the insert and it does fit snug but does't seem like it would seat properly where it should almost like it was a hair to big.Can higher revs and lots of boost cause this leak to spray?? I seem to be losing quite a bit of oil. Thanks for the info because silicone was my next move.I think I will order a new tube from somewhere and replace it.On these connections to the turbos do you recommend teflon tape or threadlock?

Just curious. I was looking at this return line as well because I'm putting on my TEC S60 VNT with homemade braided lines, and it upset me that it's the only one that isn't directly threaded to the turbo. I'm currently looking at some sort of modification that would help to keep the stock return line on there, or maybe threading the hole and running an A/N fitting with a braided line from there. If I'm successful, I'll post pics. If not, I guess I'll be running my VNT 28 instead. LOL

I checked for warpage on my pickup tube and like crazyace mentioned it is not noticible until you put a straight edge on it.So I bent it straight and bought a new o-ring from NAPA and it's like new now

Cracked, check your turbo oil supply line, as well. This is also a likely leak location.

I just washed underneath really good with engine shampoo then I put in engine oil dye. After letting the oil circulate I reved it a few times.I'ts easier to see where the leak is coming from.

p.s. I heard that if you use a black light with the dye it really shows but my black light is garbage so I can't verify.
