Can I run muffler no cat on my '89 CSX? And what is the highest boost anyone has been able to get out of a VNT reliably? I'm looking in to putting a race bullet muffler and getting a 18psi cal. I know that VNT's aren't good for upgrading but I want to bring out as much as can froom mine. Anyone??

Will run fine without a cat, 18 pounds would be over boost setting for me on a vnt turbo. 16 psi cal would be perfect. Just my thoughts. Im building a vnt 2.2 caravan for the wife should work just great. I have a 90 vnt daytona and swaped out to a garret t2 ,It can handle 22#

yes, at 18 psi and more your vnt turbo will be short lived.
You can try no cat and a muffler, but I beleive you will get lots of overboost. Unlike reg. turbo's, the VNT likes some back pressure. We have found that running a high flow cat helps the car a lot in terms of boost control.
Best to run a 2.5 cat and 2.5" catback pipes with or without muffler on a 3 bar map/+20's 16 psi cal. This is quick and fun for a daily driver. If you want to runs 11's, then sell your VNT to some one who appreciates the rarity of the VNT cars and buy yourself a t-2 car.
Later,
Cindy
