I noticed a bit of dirt and oil in my intake manifold when I took off my throttle body, and I want to clean it out. Do I really have to remove my tire, driveshaft, axle, engine mount, turbocharger and exhaust to take off the intake manifold?

If you actually have "dirt" in your intake manifold I would highly suggest that you find how that is getting into your engine first. That needs to be stopped or there is no use in cleaning it out now. If you are running a K&N filter that is most likely your issue. When I was into Fox body Fords a group of us had noticed that the K&N filters let in too much dirt and had gotten into running a dense foam filter since it was proven to stop more dirt and it really did.

Yeah there's definitely a bit of grit where the throttle body mates the intake manifold. I just finished doing a spit and polish on my throttle body and it's looking pretty good now, and I'd like to do the intake manifold but I don't want to take half my car apart a week after buying it. It's a stock filter in there and there is some noticeable dirt oil and foam in a half ring where the air returns from the PCV valve, which I just replaced (along with a connector for it). I also noticed there was some buildup of dirt in my hoses coming from my turbo to my intercooler (also getting cleaned of course). Comments?

Kind of makes ya wonder if they were running that thing without the filter in it or possibly a filter that did not fit properly. If you really want to do anything to that intake manifold you will get stuck ripping quite a bit apart. Most would argue that the head must be removed too in order to take the turbo and exhaust manifold off to gain access to the intake bolts.

BG makes a kit that will clean it out, and also clean your cylinder walls too, go to your local shop and just ask them to order it for you... or with the car running spray a crap load of carb cleaner inthere, it will run like butt for like 5 min, but all the gunk will be cleaned up and burnt out.

Well it appears that it fit, so I have no idea. Previous driver said she took good care of it, regular maintenance all done professionally. Is it worth the effort to take it all apart to clean it, and will I need to pay for anything more than gaskets?

Being that the engine is forced induction and not N/A you will not notice any difference in the way it runs. As far as the BG fuel system cleaning kit that was refered to you would need a pressure canister to force the injector cleaner into the fuel feed system. The injector cleaning would be the most beneficial thing for it out of that kit. Besides that, if it really is actual dirt you would not want to run that down into the cylinders in a big glob. Take a shop rag soaked with carb cleaner and wipe some of the crap toward outside where you can look it over a bit better.

Already did the rag and alcohol trick, and a bit with a toothbrush for fun. I didn't find much deeper in my intake when I probed with a long cotton stick, so I think I have most of it. I'm sure it was from a bad PCV connector

Most likely the oil portion came from the crankcase vent that leads to the filter for the vent. If that filter was full oil then that is most likely where it came from. Any way you look at it, it is pretty much normal to have some oil get up to there. Unless it gets excessive. Get'er back together and enjoy it.
