Look at the wastegate can on the turbo. If it has two nipples with lines going to it, it's a vnt turbo. Only one nipple on the wastegate can, it's not.

the 8th digit in the VIN will be a 'C' if it was a factory vnt car.

The hood bulge says Intercooled VNT if it's stock. Also check inside the door jams on the driver side.

What does the gauge cluster look like inside, how many nipples on your turbo outlet and wastegate, and how big is the actual turbo. The VNT is noticeably smaller than the Garret T2's.

Easiest way to tell is to look at your vacuum diagram under the hood if the original is still there (which it should be). If the solenoids list 2 VNT solenoids, it's a VNT, if not (and it's intercooled) it's T2

To be clear on the the factory turbo engine choices for the 1990 model year ...

If you have a stock factory intercooled 2.2 in a 1990 model year car, it is a VNT. 1989 was the last year for the T-II.

The only other turbo motors in 1990 were the 2.5 T-I.

Some folks have added factory type intercoolers to a 2.5 T-1 though and they "look" like a stock install.

As stated here previously, if the wastgatge actuator (vane actuator on VNT) has 2 nipples it is a VNT turbo, if it only has one nipple it is the 2.5 T-I.

Also, as was said here previously, for 1990 a C in the 8th digit of the VIN is for the VNT, while a J in that position is for the 2.5 T-I.

Note, in the Factory Service Manual for 1990, the VIN decode info mistakenly says C is for the T-II instead of T-IV for the VNT. Allpar has carried that same mistake over to their site as well.

As noted, in 1990 the only 2 turbo motors were 'C' - T4 and 'J' - T1. On g-bodies all T4 (vnt equipped cars had the vented rear rotors. Not sure about the P bodies. VNT's had black valve cover and intake. The vnt car will have a metal lower IC tube with hose on each end to connect to the IC and turbo. The vane actuator is verticle and has the two hose barbs. If you have seen any other TD wastegate can, you will immediately see this is different. The vnt cars have 4 selinoids over on the passenger inner fender. Three in a row and one on the strut tower. The intake manifold has a charge temp sensor whereas the T1 iintake does not. I only ever ran mine to 16 psi or so (bled the top actuator line). Was good for mid 14's on street tires. If you hit overboost on a vnt you will notice it is different. The vnt SBEC will allow spikes into OB for a second without kicking in. When it does, it is not a big 'wham' like the normal ob shutdown, it is more like a stutter out of the engine. The vnt will have a 568 trans whereas the T1 may not. (I have seen a couple of 90 T1's and they both had 523's although I have read that the 568 did come on some T1's). I gave up on the vnt thing and changed over to a T2, easier to get more boost, easier to get parts. The vnt is only an advantage on the street with the quick spool. If racing you launch at higher rpm and stay there, negating any benefit the vnt may have had. But - if there was a vnt readily avialable , that would make 25 psi, and live I would defintely reconsider. I am waiting for someone to adpt the bigger deisel vnt turbos.

I've been looking at those. I'd like to get my hands on one just to try it out. I think I could find a way using solenoids. They have some "E" style VGT/VNT turbos out there that are good for the 250-400hp range. If I could only find one.....
