Hey all, lost a valve spring retainer thingy assembling my head.

Does anyone know if they are the same size as the valve retainers in the 2.2/2.5 8 valve head? I have the old head but don't want to take it apart if it will not help me.

If not, does anyone know if the retainers changed throughout the years? I have a 99 DOHC head and would assume the retainers were the same for the first gen heads, but I don't want to make a trip to the junkyard to end up with something wrong.

and boo for such a important tiny and easy to loose part.

I believe that the 95-99 and maybe even till 2001-2 use the single grove retainers, teh srt/pt use 3 grove.

not sure if there the same as the 8v

when you say you lost it, did you loose it in the motor??(better find it) or is the head off?

The valve stem diameters are different on the 8-V. No interchanging anything with a 16-V.

I appreciate the offer, I will just pick up some spares my next visit to a junkyard. This isn't the only thing holding me up so I am in no hurry.

This was part number was unbelievably difficult to find (kind of like putting these things in without a special tool.)

A C-clamp with some scrap metal welded to both ends makes a
fantastic tool, faster than most specialty tools:

This setup even works on the super deep reach Triton Ford
V-8 and 10 heads, about the worst design out there.

Basically using that, using a old broken socket with a side cut out instead of metal welded to the clamp. I have all the valves in except the one I lost the keeper, took alot of patience and those cam bearing edges are sharp, my fingers are all cut up.

If you forget to remove the valve seal installation tool (like a piece of drinking straw) it can take you about 2 hrs to get one valve in....

Mike,I use one of those telescopic magnet things or a small screwdriver with a dab of grease on it to lower the keepers into place.

Great to read that you haven't given up on your build!
