Car will be under #2500 (present weight) with a 2.2/2.4 head.
Automatic trans with 3500 stall, street driven/raced but track is more important. Comp will be mid 8:5/1 or higher, free flowing
intake and exhaust. t-3/4 obviously.

50E, 54 or 57?

.63 with stage 2 or 3 wheel?

have you looked into the gt series of turbos? You can get them non ball bearing to keep the cost down a bit but they could be a better match than the standard hybrid. Take a look at the gt30r and the gt35. you can download the catalog at www.turbobygarrett.com . These sort of fill in the gaps between the hybrid and 60-1.

i was thinking 60-1 compressor, stageIII exhaust wheel for a street car, mabye .82ar housing for a race car, i know turbodave/neon runs an 82ar exhaust housing with a 60-1 compressor on his 2.4turbo

I am currently using a 60 trim compressor on my turbo along with a stage 3 wheel and a .82 housing. I recently switched from the .63 to the .83 to try and soften the hit a little, I didn't notice any more lag maybe 200rpm? Of course this is a 2.5 and breathes heavier down low. While on the dyno last year, I was at full boost, 21 psi at 3000 rpm. This turbo is a bit on the small side for my 2.5 and way small for my upcoming 2.2, I like the looks of the 60-1 myself with a stage 5 .83 housing. Russ, what will you be using for cams?

I have visions of Powerstroke Fords dancing in my head with there .82's and huge wheels!

I plan on using the stock 99TBI cams in my head, less someone says otherwise? 60-1 and .83/5.......DANG!!!! Did you try any other combo's before the 60/.63 and the 60/.82?

Russ,
I have a TO4E 57 trim 63 stage 3 on my 2.5 TIII wagon and it comes on pretty hard and fast.

I ordered an .82 stage 3 housing for the turbo and removed the 3.85 final drive 568 and will go with a 3.50 gear trying to soften the hit because the car pulls too hard in the lower gears.

The only trick is getting the wastegate to work, since it only vents 1/2 of the scroll. One option is grinding the divider away.

Trust me, you'll be happy....

Know anywhere I can get (on my budget) a turbine wheel and turbine housing from an internally gated, t3 flanged, divided housing HX40?

My first thought when looking at the HX turbo's would be to gut the divider while disassembled. The actual configuration looks like it could be cobbled with a welder to orient it. The coolest thing about these cross flow heads will be turbo swaps! I have a dual bolt pattern flange so I am hoping to tap all holes on my header for swaps. With turbo selections above I want to research the Powerstroke Fords, know I have seen .82 housings as well as 1.08's or something on them.

Ok, here is my two cents worth!

My current turbo:

60-1 with to4s cover (4 inch inlet)
t3 center
stage 5 turbine
.82 housing

On my hurt 2.4 (broken #2 ring land) my turbo would make ten pounds from 3200-4300 rpm. Then fling straight to full boost at 4400. The big housing on the exhaust softens the hit on mine fairly well. I had a t3/t4 and the hit was tooooo hard, especially at 28 psi.

I need more track time to spend on this turbo without the n2o. I feel that I can get into the 7.5x's now beating her hard in the shifting department!

Granted this turbo is laggy on the street but, it all depends on how much track duty this car will have. I run a bigger than most turbo because I am at the track more than most. Sides n2o makes a big turbo seem small:big grin:

Back, finally!

Get the GT35/40 Hybrid (35 turbine side with 40 compresser side).

Thats one sweet turbo and I'd like to use it myself.

However, if we are going to talk old style, the .63 stage III with a 50 trim works well for stock rpm, and the 57 trim if you you are going higher rpm.

For What It Is Worth:

My 2.2 car with the untouched "G" head and the 50 trim/stage 3/.63 housing does fairly well.

1.730 60'
7.295 1/8
94.03 MPH
9.574 1000
11.525 1/4
114.73 MPH

I know that the Turbo has a lot more in it and my limitation is the head at this point.

Rocky is in the 7.19 @ 97 mph area on the 1/8th with his ported head, with an E.T. of 11.30 in the 1/4. (Same Turbo)

The .63 Stage 3 should be quite laggy on a 2.2 with unported SOHC head. It would be fine for race but not street.
