My bro had a 1990 saab 900 turbo. The 87-newer (I think 87, maybe 88) are 16 valve heads, very fast and capable! They run a standard T3 flange so an upgrade of the turbo is limitless. But they are hard to mod and go over 15 PSI, the ECU is very tricky on them and aftermarket goodies are expensive. My bro graingered his to 15 PSI, and had 2.5'' exhaust on it and it was as fast as my daytona with the following mods-
2.2L
A520 tranny
stock swirl head
ported exhaust manifold
S70 w/.48 turbine
dual core IC
3'' exhaust
3 bar and +40's, TU calibration
17 PSI boost graingered
We were side by side on the highway, neither could gain an inch. Not bad since he paid $500 for it!
