I recently got a Golf TDI. I had expected good economy, but lousy performance. I got the economy I expected (48 - 49 mpg with a heavy foot), but the performance surprised the crap out of me. I develops full torgue at 1900 rpm, and with the VNT turbo, I never have to downshift, it just takes off.

Yesterday, I went to a performance shop, and he'll "chip" and tune the computer for me, and I'll pick up about 100 fps of torque and another 35 HP. That'll be all I want or need. He has a Jetta that has 200HP, 480 fps of torque, and get 56 mpg, and is his daily driver. He took me for a ride. Only one word to describe it...awsome!!

You think that the current TDI's are bad for performance? HEHEHE. I had an 85 Golf with a 1.6L Deisel motor. No turbo! No nothing! this thing was awesome at fuel milage, but it couldn't get out of it's own way. I'd say the 0-60' times were calculated by a calander, instead of a stopwatch.

But if this guy can get you performance like that with just a chip, then I say go for it.

that car was my second choice. I ended up buying my first choice ('05 ACR). I had to get something as my 2 Dodge V8's get 12-13 MPG (Dakota 4X4, Durango R/T)
The SRT-4 more than doubled my gas mileage...but your TDI would have quadruppled it. WOW! That is awesome. I still love my SRT but gas prices went up right after I bought it. The TDI would have been a free car payment considering the savings. And yes I/We do drive that much. When gas was $2/gallon we were
spending $500+-/month So when gas approached $4/gallon...I looked at it like a free car payment. My monthly gas bill now is under $400 month.

I had a small problem with the 'MIL' light. That's what brought me to him in the first place. The dealer said the turbo was toast and I needed a new one ($2500 installed). Turns out it was a minor problem with the actuator. After he fixed it, he took the car out with a VAG Com hooked up and reset some of the basic VW settings, and I can't believe the difference that little bit made in performance. Now, once I'm in 5th gear, I never have to downshift. It climbs hills with absolutely no loss in speed or power, even if I'm as low as 1500 rpm. The torque is awsome! When he found out that I can get items from Germany, he suggested that I get the items he tells me to, and he'll turn my car into the European version of 150HP and 250 lbs of torque, and over 55 mpg. These engines are not sold in North America, and are real screamers. They can run at 120MPH all day and still get 50 mpg. I told him it'll be my Christmas gift to myself.

If you ever decide to get one, I'll hook you up with him. He's a 'retired' engineer that started doing this as a sideline. Now he drives all over the place just to do tuning and set ups. He just sent me all the info I need to get the German turbo. The only thing holding me back is cash.
