My new Winter pride and joy, one owner, BMW 324td Kombi (Wagon). Snagged it for 700 Euros, with 2 sets of BBS Rims, one winter set, and a summer set of tires. Has new head, and Turbo. Did synthetic oil change, all filters.
Good solid, built like a Tank, just not neck snapping acceleration going on. On reason is the added on Catalytic converter...added to reduce the horrid tax rates on the car. It will be gutted soon. Next thing is...I want to bump the boost a tad, see what difference it makes.
Question...I head that Diesels dont produce vacuum in the same way a Benzin...uh, sorry, "Gasoline" powered car does...I was wanting to integrate an extra Daytona boost gauge I have laying around into the center console to keep an eye on the progress that I will hopefully make, Also have an extra Manual Boost Regulator (Grainger) laying around as well, and want to install it as well, with the Intercooler that I scavenged off of a Porsche 944 Turbo. The car, with its tiny 6 cylinder is silky smooth, and the Turbo boost is "linear", not explosive like my TD's...so I was wondering how much Boost it makes at all! It whistles like crazy too...no doubt that its spinning under there!
Was wondering...where would the Grainger hook up? Same as a Gas engine? And, will the car make enough Vacuum to drive a Boost gauge? Anybody knows, let me know! Thanks...

Thanks for the info...I looked at the engine a bit more closely today, and I see and was told, that BMW has integrated (under the Valve cover) a Vacuum pump, so feed/drive the Brakes etc. So I guess I will be tasked with T'ing" into that Vac circuit, see what happens. The Turbo is "right there" (not hidden like our cars) and has but one Vac line coming from it, leading from the Turbo compressor housing, along the firewall, and over to what is (evidently) a Vacuum solenoid of sorts, and that is then vented to a little round filter, and from the filter,a little "L" shaped pc. of rubber tubing. So I guesss where our cars vent to the atmosphere, BMW was atad more complicated in their appraoch. Wonder if I "T" in that MBC in between all that, if I will get any manual override on that Turbo? I just dont want to blow up my Winter Ride...if anyone has tried something like that, give me a shout! Thanks!

For your gauge you'll need to tee into the line coming off the compressor housing. Hooking into the line from your vacuum pump will only show you the vacuum produced by the pump.
For your grainger, just hook into the line going to the wastegate. With the diesel you don't have to worry about running lean, so you could just disconnect the wastegate and see what kind of boost numbers you get. On the same token, extra boost won't necessarily increase power unless you have more fuel to burn. Good luck!

cool! (its in the shop getting a clutch now) but hey! When it gets out, lets see how long it takes till I blow it up! (kidding...) I feel the Turbo spin up almost instantly everytime, but if I stay in it, like when passing, you feel when the preset limits are met, and the Gate open, and it bleeds off, even though it feels like it wants to make more torque and power. So..we will see. First the gauge...I want to see what the little Fan is making in the way of boost...after that, I can get experimental...Thanks again!

Probably the governor cutting back the fuel. I'm not familiar with the Beemers fuel system, don't know whether it's electronic or mechanical. I'm sure there's someone over there who can tweak it.

Update: I couldnt get the Daytona gauge to read any kind of Vacuum on this thing at all! I T'd that thing all over the engine bay..and when I got it to read at all, it read REVERSE! (Revved,Loaded the motor, and it swept to the left!!) I have sinced just pulled the wastegates vac line off, throttle feel is better, but it only maked "x" amount of boost. Wish I knew how much! Next mod, an Intercooler...either a Pajero or Supro on top Model, or if I can scare up the plumbing (murderously expensive over here) stick it in the grill...loads of room up there.

Yeah, who cares about vacuum, you care about BOOST.. That line you yanked off the wastegate might be a good source for reading boost. It's a place to start.
