I just scored a 91 Spirit. Turbo, auto. White with matching white mag wheels. I'm going to go pick it up in the next week or 2. I'm very excited. I've never seen a spirit turbo personally.

Now for my questions.....
This must be a rare car..any idea how rare?
Will my 5 speed transmission assembly with mounts, shifter, cables, and pedals fit from a 87 sundance?
It's got a 2.5 that might be blown....will my 2.2 from the sundance fit with the existing computer? Or should I just get a 2.5 to throw in there?

THanks.

all 2.2/2.5 trannies bolt to all 2.2/2.5 engines. they all interchange. your shifter will probably work, im not sure what trannies are involved since i mainly know omnis.. not sure on the pedals either. but you wont have a problem finding everything you need on this forum.

the 2.2 bottom end will bolt directly in as all of the 2.2/2.5's interchange, the computers im not sure on. i dont think smecs were around in 87, but the 91 definately has one.. again im not certain since the only td's i really care about are omnis

they arent really common cars, but they arent exactly rare either. personally id only pay 5 or 600 bucks if the motor is dead, and thats if the rest of the car was minty.

i dont know how much you know about td's or what you are paying, but id have a look at the car ads on this site before commiting to anything so you can get a feel for what these cars are worth.

turbo spirits are not rare, but not exactly common these days either as most have been either parted, parked or crushed. Almost everything from your 87 will fit except computer. Only computer that will fit is a 90-91, and in 90 and 91 there was no 2.2T1 available, so there is NO computer that is a simple drag and drop. Your choices are either to swap all the engine and dash wiring from your 87 into that 91 or to get a 90-91 SBEC recalibrated for a 2.2, which isn't cheap.

Your trans will fit, and your pedals and shifter gear should fit, but I'm not 100% on that. If the interiors didn't change between those years, then there's no reason it shouldn't interchange. Your 87 probably has a 520 in it, which would work in your 91 no problem.

Depends on what your idea of rare is. If it is a 91 ES turbo with a auto, the production number is 619 built. I was lucky to find a 91 ES turbo 5-speed, one of 318 built. Have fun!!

IMO 1 of 619 is rare. I'm going to pick it up tonight. We'll see what happens.

Wow! A white Spirit Turbo ES with sunroof and 5-speed? Didn't know there was such a critter. I've got a white '90 Spirit ES Turbo 3-speed auto, but always lusted after a stick in this car. When I bought the car the 1991's where already coming out. The dealer had a leftover '90 ES Turbo 3-speed auto and a '91 plain Jane Spirit 2.5 with 5-speed stick for the same price. Had to go with the ES and have never regretted it. However, a stick would be nice!

Yeah I have seen Spirit ES's with sunroofs and the V6 but not the turbo 5spd before this car. The plain jane spirits with the 5spd are not that common eather, too many v6 ones.... I have no idea how many of each were made.

Lucky you getting your car new. I saved this one from the local junk yard. It also has a spoiler on it though it isn't like the RT ones. The car was at the junk yard because a rod tried to escape the block... Being a PA car it has a small amount of rust that can be fixed. It does need a good clean in and out, a paint job, some replacement parts, but some day she will be a nice car to drive... I hope.. The Spirit has all the options that you could want, and my daily driver Acclaim has all the options that I don't want. It only has three options front bench seat, auto and cassette. I already got rid of the cassette I am thinking of getting rid of the two other options later this summer.

Firehawk618, is the spirit an ES, or LE http://www.allpar.com/model/acclaim.html
Though I have seen Spirit base turbos there is a tan one in the local junk yard. The other local junk yard has a FFV Spirit I am thinking of getting the 18gal tank. LE 5spd turbo http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.js...en&cardist=200

Cass, the 92 Spirit turbos are pretty hard to find. Whats really different about mine is that, it's painted Indy Red just like the R/T's. I have a link below of pics of the cars. The 91 is under My cars, and the one pic of the 92 is under the Daytona.
