Turboing a Focus?

My buddy has a ZX5 Focus and me other buddy and I are wanting to beef up the power some. I've got my 86 laser that I'm trying to sell, but it doesn't look like it's going. So I've been considering pulling the turbo off and sticking it on his Focus. But I'm not sure what all goes into turboing an n/a motor.

Obviously the exhaust will need to be worked, as well as intake. I'd like to IC it as well. I'm assuming larger injectors would be a must. I think we should be able to boost 6psi with the stock Mitsu turbo, and IC, and larger injectors and still be very safe in terms of a/f and EGT's. What about internals? What can the stock engine take?

I think the 3 of us could get it rolling w/o much hassle, even though we have no real idea what we're doing But it would be fun.

It's either his Focus or my Step-dad's slow AWD Rav4, which I think would be fun with some forced induction

The focus will have much higher air volume requirements that i am not sure the Daytona turbo would meet. For the amount of money that a turbo conversion woudl cost, I woudl consider building up the focus motor for a strong N/A tune or swap in an SVT focus motor in and swap cams and header. These focus's ( or are plural focus's focai ?? LOL ) can be a blast to drive, not my cup of tea but I have helped build up a few of them.. fun little machines.

a focus cannot be built well NA. i have an 03 and know the car very well. it can be a very effective car boosted. i'm not sure about that particular turbo on it but with a good tune and enough fuel the stock cast internals can be good for ~1 bar of boost. that being said it is certainly not an easy build up. you'd need quite a bit or time, work, and the money you'd put in it wouldn't be worth the power you'd see. its why i have the focus as a daily driver and the td for a project car. you're best bet would be to find a used jrsc, (jackson racing supercharger) buy the ford big boost kit, and buy a beefed up clutch. this can be good for ~220whp and 190ish torque. for tons of info on these cars i recommend checking out www.thefocusconnection.com, i am a member there and have learned everything from the guys on there. a great group of people btw.

I think the mitsu would be a horrible choice for a turbo since its too small for a 100hp n/a motor, so dont see it grooving with a 150hp n/a motor.

15 psi seems a bit to high unless you are running some mad octane. Probably would still blow the ringlands eventually.

If you want a car that needs c16 to drive on the streets, go ahead. 6 psi and a t3 turbo with the escort manifold sounds decent to me though.

should just swap in the 2.3L SVO mustang engine already turbo'd top mount intercooler... on the serious part though, im sure he wouldnt like to swap in an 80s motor for his brand new engine, so i would say if you guys are up for a weekend into the week project ur gonna have to have the proper exhaust manifold, turbo of choice, correct fuel system, an sct chip i beleive u can toss one on a focus... vaccum lines, gauges, a welder, its a big job, i put a supercharger on my mustang and it ran like shit untill i tuned it right, so dont under estimate a tune/fuel work..

i built a turbo focus in '00 when they first came out. i was running 7 psi on a daily driver and it got along pretty well. i never had any problems. i was running a 5th injector setup with the stock fuel system. the car w/ turbo had 48k when i got rid of it and about 28k w/ the turbo. back when i had mine i ran an aerocharger turbo kit non intercooled. i dont think they make that kit any more but i know that there are several alternatives. you can also check out focaljet.com its the largest focus dedicated site and has all the info you will need.

my brother has an 03 ZX3 and has gone through 4 MOTORS in 6 months because of bad tuning from the SVT mechanics at Sheehy in Gaithersburg. Steer clear from those things. Not worth the time or hassle. my .02

I have seen a good amount of 200+whp all motor focuses. it might cost more to do an all motor focus then it is to build a comparable honda however saying a focus cannot be built NA isn't correct. Cosworth ($$) for one has an assortment of NA parts to acheive substantial gains for zetec and duratec engines.

That will only work if he has the SPI engine in it. It will not work in the Zetec or the Duratec.

what did all this cost to purchase, and what kind of gains did you see?
