I know that the 1.6L MINI engine is dervied from the neon 2.0L. I know that it is it own engine manufactured in Brazil seperate from Chrysler. I know that it is not installed in any US Neon.

What I have long been curious about is taking a Neon 2.0L shortblock and bolting it into a MINI. Would this work and be do-able? Now before you say it won't work, I just want to point out all of the 16V hybrids running around. That wasn't supposed to be possible.

Guy at work has one and the curiousity is killing me. I have no desire for one of those. I'd rather have a GLH-T for a hot hatch.

I know that block requires modifications to fit where 2.0Ls reside. I was thinking of pure bolt in like you can do with 2.2L to 2.5L kind of things.

My cousin has a Cooper S, when I first looked under the hood, it sure reminded me a lot of the sohc 2.0 in my 95 neon. I have no idea if parts woudl swap, but that mini makes an L-body look roomy under the hood.

Ok well I saw a hayabusa motor in the back of a classic mini in rear engine rwd format... but what does that have to do with this question?

Curiosity got the better of me on a transaxle question and I send a few emails back and forth between an engineer at the Tritec plant in Brazil. The 1.4/1.6L may have been designed by ChryCo and based off the 2.0L family, but they share no parts. I was curious about the Getrag 285 in the Cooper S for any possible transplants to the Chrysler engines and was also told they don't even share the same bell housing design.

The Mini also has an extremely tiny engine bay. The 2.0L isn't too much bigger, but it's big enough that I doubt it would physically fit (especially the DOHC's). The joint venture between BMW was sold off and the Mini is going to use a new Citroën-Peugeot engine next year (should be another 1.6L) and the S version it supposed to be turbocharged.

I knew someone out there would have the engineering knowledge to answer my question.

Thanks,
