Posting for a buddy. Does the 96 DSM car have an interference engine or not. Supposedly After 3k they do but we don't know. Anyways, I looked on here, but didn't see anything and being loyal to the TD community, decided against signing up to a DSM forum.

Thanks.

I thought all DSMs were interference, 3k milage or RPM?

if its an interference engine then it stays that way, only exception I know of is in the case of a VTEC honda were the cam profile changes and it could make it an interference engine depending on the cam profile(s). Maybe this is what you are thinking of since VTEC changes the cam profile at a certain RPM

it matters which motor, both are interference however the 4g63 is more prone to bend a valve

OUCH, you bent most of the valves. If the balance shaft belt didn't cause the problem, make sure you replace it when you do the job.

Interference! I pulled all the timing covers and idled the engine to see where the oil leak was, then out of nowhere CLACK! turns out the oil pump pulley nut fell off and the timing cover was the only thing keeping the pulley on. A new head and 2 new pistons later all was good again. ( After $450 in parts and machine work and about 10 hours later that is.)

If it is a 4G63 you ALWAYS replace that tensioner for the timing belt. So if you have to pull the head and replace a valve get one. I don't care how good it looks throw it out and I would go to the dealer to get a new one. The water pump runs off that belt just like a 420a. I love a 4g63 you just have to fix a lot of stupid crap on them.

Good info on the tensioner but the 4G63 waterpump isn't driven by the timing belt but you do need to remove the timing belt to replace it. Also replace all the oil seals and balance shaft belt.

ARG.. yep you are correct...

The 420a is the one with the belt driven water pump
BIG pain in the @$$ to mess with when they sieze and go breaking the timing belt.
I mess with way to many 4 cylinders. Another thing on those 4g63's you ALWAYS..Need to check the oil filter. The sending unit can come loose with a simple oil change. The stud the oil filter screws onto is threaded on the other end. So anotherwords if your filter is put on to tight and you take it off the threads on the oppisite can come loose. Then what happens is the motor will vibrate and the stud lets the sending unit gap away from the block causing a massive oil leak BEHIND the sending unit. The oil light comes on after you have lost almost all oil. I had this happen so I found out the hard way on how to replace the bottom end of a awd talon in the car. Of course I had solid motor mounts to..which added to the vibrating. just a little FYI on a 4g63.

yeah it doesn't matter if it's turbo or non turbo, any 2g or 1g eclipse is an interference. One good thing on the 420a motor is that it doesn't have a balance shaft. As far as changing the belt, it should be replaced every 60k along with the idler pulley and tensioner, might as well get the water pump done while the engine is tore down. Hope this helps, good luck!
