I have just bought my first car. it is a 1989 dodge daytona shelby 2.2 turbo. it has 129k miles and was running great untill a massive ammount of smoke began to poor out of the exaust pipe. my first thought was headgasket but I did a compression check and all pistons had the same pressure plus the car still performed great all the way to the shop even though smoke is pooring out. I am in a jam...I think that something is up with the oil in the turbo but I don't know. please help...

May be a blown oil seal in the turbo. Is the smoke a dark oily smoke or is a light colored coolant smoke?

Also try posting in the turbo dodge help section, not the 'other turbo vehicles' section.

Rebuild kits can be had, but they are no picnic to install. Not something you'll do in an afternoon, especially for someone who's just learning.

If I was you I might try disconnecting and plugging the oil feed line to the turbo, then start it up and idle it a bit. Do not drive it do not rev it over 1500rpm with the oil disconnected from the turbo, but I'd just try that. If the smoking stops after idling it a bit then you know oil is getting past the turbo and into the exhaust. If the smoke persists after 10-15 minutes of running with the oil disconnected, then your problem is elsewhere. Remember, don't drive or rev it high with no oil going to the turbo.

Id bet its the turbo, is it a constant stream of smoke, does it smoke ALOT when you start driving and then thin out when you coast? If that is the case, a rebuild kit is just the minimum take the turbo apart, make sure the shaft hasnt been worn down and same with the center cartridge, if they have they will have to be machined and you will have to get oversized bearings, thats is if the turbo is salvagable in the first place.
