I put 130K miles on my 89 Starion ESI-R. Sweet car. It started smoking at idle at 80K miles, so I put a turbo on it. Then at like 100k miles I did the head with the Jet valve Eliminator kit (jet valve is a small valve with a head the size of a 15penny nail designed to induce turbulence in the combustion chamber to help cope with emissions) and an inframe rebuild to relieve the 'rod knock' bearings were good, turned out it was the cam chain/guides/oil pressurized cam chain tensioner. Stoped smoking and ran much stronger after that. Sold it at 130K, I think that kid thrashed it in short order. The BEST factory brakes on any car I've ever owned

I think I did CV axles, clutch, motor mounts, struts and not much else in all those miles...

How did you like yours? Was it worth the work? Did it drain your pockets?

I currently own an 87 conquest with many mods. I would not make it my daily driver, but I have put 20,000 miles boosting 20 psi on it since I did the build (forgeed pistons...etc.etc. Runs great....not really had any major problems. I truly beleive that if one just learns to understand how one of these car work and what little things make the difference they could go along time. As far a the head issues, Save up and put a AMC Marnel head on it, and never have the problem again. At stock boost is no enough to hurt that head. The jet vale elimanator is a good idea but does not fix the problem. The metal sleeve is still in the head. The caravan head is a better head but still weak between the valves. (where they are known to crack). But a properly put together and maintained starquest is a fine running car...tempermental...but none the less and absolute blast to drive. If you are going to buy one you will be working on it as you will surley get sucked into the aftermarket. LOL....Just learn as much as you can and be patient...Besides, they are fairly easy to work..IMO

I didn't know there was an AMC replacement head, then again, my Starion was never really a project car for me either. I had a lot of great years with it. Right footed rear steer can never be replaced by any of my FWD TD's

BTW, can someone come get this 83 hood thats been sitting on my side yard for years?? Will not ship it...

where are you located? I might come get that hood from you if you are not too far.

Edit. Just read you are in SoCal. That is a long ways.

Its red (now kind of an oxidezed orangish color) was perfect not a scratch, no rust, now it's been sitting 4 years in the sun.

Its in Mission Viejo, CA. The OC. Yes, it's a vented (fake vent actually) 83 hood.

I believe that car was started on then sold and is currently being put together by the new owner. I don't believe that it has ever fired yet. But yes the 6g72 does look awsome sitting front to back in a RWD car.

One night at the Phoenix Pavillions Saturday night show (like 1997 or so) the was a very clean Starion with a BB Chevy motor stuffed up there. It was a claean conversion and he used the stock rear bt the blower hat was a bit over the top. I took a pic but it was in the pre digital days

here is a picture of the LS1 that is on you tube. You can find it on streetfire as well. Noticed it is a turboed LS1.
