I could probably make all you starquest folks sick (or at least jealous), i know a guy who has at least 15-20 conquests and starions, some of you may know the guy but he is the one who has helped my brother build his conquest. Havent met him yet though. He must be a preatty nice guy to help my brother out as much as he has though. He supposedly has a total of 50 of those cars but i dont know that for sure. I could ask my brother and get the exact number.

Is his name Timmy from Allentown? Last time I went cruising he brought out like 8 of them 1 of which was legal.

No, but i wouldnt feel right putting his name up. Its pretty safe to say though that if you are cruising around south central Indiana you are either seeing one of his cars or my brothers car. He has quite a few that are nice i think, but i know he has a bunch of them that he uses for parts. Like i said i have never talked to him but he helps my brother out a lot.

I've had 2 of them........a red '88 TSI with the SHP package and a red '89 TSI with SHP as well.

here is my '89 below....I sold it last summer. I bought it from a wrecking yard when I lived in CA and it was a complete basketcase. Spent about $3,500 total and what little spare time I could give it getting it all back in order.

I have 5 of them and none of them run. Nice looking cars and a blast to drive if they were running. These cars are very tempermental. You either learn paitence or sell the car if you own one. I tried to keep one running for more than a month. It didn't happen. Out of 5 you would think you could get 1 to run right. My main one, I studded the head with ARP bolts, and used the minivan head. My girlfriend drove the car immediately afterwards and the water pump went out after 30 miles. Blew the head gasket for the 4th time in 3 months. That was when I said screw it. It would load up with fuel at a stop light and would barely pull itself off of a light, automatic. You had to floor it just to get it barely rolling. All the while people honking at you and passing you. I checked everything out and even took it to the dealer. They were baffled too. Dealers don't have the special equipment needed to diagnose these cars either because they were so different from their normal car line. The car ran great down the road. There are better ways to invest your money. If you have one of these you better have deep pockets, good mechanical skills and a backup car to drive.

Can we put these size wheels and tires under a L body?

Great looking car but I still don't like the G54b.

Anything can be made to work with enough effort this really is similar to the 8v vs. 16v idea. The 4g63 is a good engien with a 16v head and a ton of aftermarket. The G54b is a bad engine from the factory and needs work. It also has a much smaller aftermarket.

Which is best to you really is about what you WANT to build.

I think it would also be reasonable to drop and SRT4 engine in one because the engine is cheaper power than either the G54b or 4g63 (considering you need to do the truck block to make it work).

Being a DSMer....let me set a few things straight:

G54B.....Heads like to crack, MCA jets, timing chain rattle (abeit usually from a worn out motor with low oil pressure), aftermarket is about a hard to find as a virgin after prom night. The bottom end IS strong....the pistons are not. This was a NA truck motor they stuck a turbo on and tweaked and changed things for 7 years trying to get it to work. By the end, they almost had it....But the 4G63 had already been scheduled to replace it (It actually did in AUS, late 80s quests with 4G63). The wonderful (sarcasm) TBI setup often causes issues with poor connections at the injectors and now with 20+ years on the wiring....getting brittle and falling apart. But......it is doable. If you do the non-jet head, build the motor properly and keep up with the upkeep, it will serve you until you get tired of it.

4G63....The Small Block Chevy of the import world, the design was first used in 1972 and added a DOHC in the 80s. Since then it has been refined and tweaked to become probably the most widely known and feared 4 cyl's in the world. Why?
World's fastest 4-cyl....6.86 at 199mph Brent Rau
World's fastest AWD 4-cyl....7.70 with 195+ mph traps John Shephard

Crankwalking is not as common as u think. It was primarily only the early 2g block (95-96) that suffered from this and even then it's like an estimated 10-15%. And they have found out why so that will not be an issue.

However, most of the time you will be using motors from the early 1g's (89-92.5) known as the 6-bolt motors. These motors are 600hp capable on the stock motor, easy to find and respond very nicely to mods (300hp with stock turbo). And no, you do not have to use only the truck block. Visit Buschur Racing's site as they have built countless 4G63 Starquests that are running 9s and 8s consistantly. And they sell the conversion parts too. Most of the tranny options are PG, TH350 and/or TH400. Im sure you can get an adapter to mate a nice T56 or similar to it. Let's not forget the aftermarket of the 4G63....where do I start?

SRT4.....if you want to fab everything up (since no one has done one yet) then im sure it would be feasible. But, consider that the SRT4 motor isn't exactly sitting around in people's yards (4G63's are EVERYWHERE!), the aftermarket is decent and good luck convincing someone that you kept it a dodge by doing the swap (We all know the Conquest was imported for Dodge by Mitsu).

SBC V8s.....Hate to say it, but by far the easiest and cheapest. Power is ok considering the extra cubes, but you also have tons of extra weight up front. The Starquests were awsome hadling cars at the start considering the near 50/50 they had, but the extra 200+ lbs of V8 and trans will upset that balance. A nicely upgraded 350 can put out 250-300hp on pump with a simple carb so no real extra wiring needed.

The Starquest body is still one of my all-time favs with the gorgeous aggressive lines and wide (Post 86) stance often was evil to see in your rear-view mirror. The interior is ok, but lots of gadgets and small buttons that wear off.

Great post Wizard, welcome aboard. My 89 Starion ESIR Motor (minus the jet valves, guides and timing chain tensioners) really did last me until I was tired of it, 130K miles...
