Hoping to reach some Neon know-it-alls here.
I have a neighbor with an '03 Neon that had a headlight switch issue... basically no headlights, but could pull and hold the high beam switch for some kind of lights--better than nothing!
The plastic connector to the multifunction switch was overheated, and is deformed from the excess heat. Still usable though. And the main on/off connector inside the switch assembly was also melted down quite a bit, ultimately causing the inoperative headlights. So, I attribute this to an excess current draw somehow. The switch itself isn't malfunctioning anywhere, (like allowing high beams and low beams to be on simultaneously). No relays in the circuit.
Is this a common problem on these Neons? I just did a patch-up repair that should work quite well, provided the switch doesn't overheat again. Headlight bulbs are the correct ones, fog lamp bulbs are original to the car (as told, needs verification). The circuit requires a 25 amp fuse. I accidentally blew it and only had 20 and 30 amp fuses around, so I shoved in a 20 and its working fine with that. I'd hate to install a new multifunction switch only to melt down that switch again.
