guys no my omni is very close to stock... in fact the engine itself is all original. all i have is a big exhaust and a custom calibration with some +20% injectors, thats basically it for power adders.

do that type of limited mods to an otherwise stock 1986 GN and oh yes I would say this would be a good contest, i know i would be the underdog, and would probably loose, but the racing would be close and would make for a great write up in HMM magazine.

and please dont start with the claim bone stock GN's go 12's!!! i was there in 1987, they go low 14's stock.

Those same mods will put a gn easily in the 12's w/ a decent street tire.

That would be interesting both cars maxxed out on boost with all bolt on parts, stock turbo to stock turbo Im almost thinking the glh might have an advantage there except for that darn .48 turbine

MVAUGHN yes thats what i was thinking, a 86/87 GN with only an aftermarket exhaust, a chip, and some sticky tires would be in the high 12's, so it would be a good contest against my car.....i spoke w/ an editor at HMM about a GLHS/GN/SVO Mustang "1986 Turbo Cars Shootout" a while back and they said they'd cover it if the cars were about equal on the strip and of excellent quality.

that would be a blast to participate in especially as the underdog.

If they need a backup I could make my glhs look stock if I had to.

yeah, I don't know what 7.80's in the eigth equates to, but that was on Cooper street radials and with a TA-49 and supporting bolt on mods. It felt like an 11 sec. car. But I don't know that Marcus' GLHS is that modified, I was just under the impression it ran 12's. Either way, it's real damn nice.

Don't worry I don't ride the "10 sec car with air filter and chip flagship." I do own one of the these. Just didn't really know what you meant by slightly modified. A chip and exhaust is almost a given on any TB cause the exhaust is usually rotted out by 5 years ago and the chips timing is too high for todays gas along with other quirks they had that dogged idle and other aspects. When I thought slightly modified I figured some GOOD bolt ons with stock turbo and converter. bigger injectors aren't going to help a stock car with exhaust. The fuel just isn't going to be needed. I'd say basics are TT chip, box and bushing upper and lower control arms (to get rid of the nasty wheel hop), walbro 340 pump and hotwire kit, bosch 237 regulator, 9" K&N cone, bypass throttle body coolant, brethers in valve covers with bypass blocked off on turbo, clean intercooler, drag radials. Marcus, your car is doing 12s just off exhaust and a tune? Damn. Are you still running stock downpipe or did you do full exhaust. Living in New England you shouldn't have to much trouble tracking down a low modded car. I know there's a lot of modded TRs running out there, but there's gotta be way more garage queens than there is here. I just realized how broke I am today. Glad I worked 12 hour days all this week. Probably gonna take me 2 months of overtime to get caught up and have money to buy the cheapo turbo dodge I found. 11 mpg is killing me

USETABOOST i tried several times to get a shootout organized going thru HMM but sorta gave up after a while. Hopefully when I speak to the guys end of this month at Hemmings Musclepalooza I can maybe get a little more help from them, they are the ones that got the insight into where a GN and SVO could be drawn from. On your question, yes i did get into the 12's with just those few power adders, along w/ a few other minor non-stock parts.... there's a complete list of everything underhood that is not stock on my cardomain page #1. Shelby GLHS: Mark's 1986 Shelby GLHS #126 of 500 - Ellington, Connecticut

everytime i am at LVD i check out all the GN's i see and there have been many, but they were all highly modified and running sick ET's way into the 11's some into the 9's (that orange one)....the couple 80's SVO Mustangs i have seen in past few years are also highly modified there's one black one, i recall it being the 1st year made, the guy runs low 10's with it.

RGH: the best 1/8th i ever did was an 8.099 at 86 mph, missed 4th gear on that run so never got a full ET....your 7.80 would probably net you what? about a 11.999?

good god man, I didn't realize you were going that fast with so few mods. As to the quarter mile of my old Regal, I don't know, I never ran it in the quarter. As I said, it felt like an 11 second car, so my guess would be real high 11's or real low 12's.

Hey guys Im new to the TD world. My name is Vince
I have been a die hard Turbo Buick guy forever still my number one ....but dodge is definitely a close second. I love the lab in the pics marcus I have one myself. That definitely would be a great race and comparison to see, I hope it happens . It definitely is hard to find a bone stock GN these days.
as for Daily Drivers .........as a turbo buick guy its Tuff to use one as a DD I get about 12-13 mpg with my T. I even thought about selling it since gas is only going to get worse but hopefully I can get my hands on a clean GLHS charger ...so who knows.

SORRY to ramble on guys but I just have two questions .......How hard is it for the Average GLHS car to get into the 12s and are these cars pretty Torquey ......????

they posted a link to a survey where you got to vote for the best turbo car of the 80's i voted for the GNX knowing it was the best of the best from that era, so I agree w/ you Vince...and maybe the GN and GLHS would sorta tie for second place.......the Mustang SVO ran away w/ that survey no surprise what with the 100 million Stang lovers out there.

i know for sure you could take any bone stock 86S, that still has a good solid engine with no issues, and get it into the 12's w/ exactly the same parts i stuck on my car. the 86S was the lightest factory-intercooled car ever made by dodge/shelby. that helps a lot of course. all the 2.2L turbo charged dodges are know for the low rpm and high peak torque characteristics, thats why they respond so well to small changes.

you're right about the GNX being HANDS DOWN the best turbo car of the eighties (this is assuming we're only talking about American cars. If not I gotta go with the Ferrari GTO or Porsche 959). Then a tie between the regular turbo Buicks and the S cars. The SVO would be a close third.

........ Oooooh God that piece of . They are kool and all but up against a GLH ......... I dont thinks so

they need to do more than just a popularity survey........THEY NEED A SHOW DOWN . God that would be a sweet race GN :VS: GLHS

So do those same mods apply for getting a charger into the 12s maybe with a little more since it is a little more heavy ?
