I personally fell in love with TD's because of their extreme, lego like, swapp-ability. My '89 k with an '82 lebaron front end looked mean. I wanted the hood from a 600 and the fenders from a 400, but never got around to it. At over 300,000 miles the bearings desinegrated, and I never got around to putting a tII in it. Sadly franken-k went to the scrap yard. After driving my '97 legacy for a few years I started researching performance. I was very suprised to find that Subarus are very similar to Regan-era, Iococca K-vehicles. With a '90 or newer chasis you can bolt in whatever drive train you want. You have to be prepared for twenty hour harness swap though. The harness swap makes TD and honda harness swaps look like childs-play. With a STi drive train in a '99 2.5rs you can run a mid 11. With no mods on the motor. The parts are alot more expensive than TD's though. Used STi drive train w/less than 50k will set you back $10k to $15k. But that does include 6-speed, brembo brakes and everything underneath a STi. I was amazed at the build comparability to TD's. Subaru offers more bodies now than they ever have-Baja, Impreza, Legacy, Forester, and the Tribeca. Five bodies isn't many.
