I was under the impression they were both the same since (turbo) people upgrade to SS valves.

His is a 2g and n/t's have 420a's. I was thinking he had a 92 for some reason.

I am pretty sure they are identical minus The oil galley plug where the turbo feed bolts up.

Assuming its turbo, from being posted in the "other turbo" section the head is almost identical to a 1G 90-94 4G63 head. A 1G head WILL swap without ANY problems since its a 97 and the cam sensor is on the passanger side of the engine. Sometimes the oil feed galley is just capped off with a plug......but its better to take it from the end of the head anyway...its cooler and higher pressure.

Slowboy Racing has a COMLPETE timing belt kit. As well as the oil feed line.

4G64, 4G61, 4G63 heads are basically the same except cams and casting #s. None of the DSMS came with SS valves stock.

The pistons do have reliefs cut, but they are not deep enough for "free spinning".

You can almost guarentee that the valve guides are trash and there is a 50% chance that your pistons are cracked.

Its Definately cheaper to replace the head......and make sure you inspect the pistons for cracks thouroughly before blending out the dents or your new head will be junk soon after you install it.

I personally would swap the entire engine to a 90-92 complete. You will notice more power and reliability is better.

T-belt snaps, destroying drivelines, and 2G crankwalk is the price you pay for owning DSMS that can easily make 400whp. I did the DSM thing for 8years......Only Marco from magnus has broke more stuff than me.

They are really fun/powerful/frustrating.

If you do decide to go with a 1g head, remember that the intake ports are (much) larger for the 1g and I would advise using a 1g intake manifold to match it. Also, the 1g throttle body is 60mm compared to 52.

Don't mean to be petty, but it's actually backwards; the oil filter housing is a cooler and higher pressure oil feed source than the head. 97-99 have less chance of crankwalk if I remember right because of a revised thrust bearing design. If it's going to remain stock then I wouldn't worry about doing a 6 bolt(early 1g) swap since 7 bolts are underrated and crankwalk is overrated. I'm assuming so since it's your gf's car

maybe I was lucky (?) but I had to do the bent valve dance twice on my 92 TSi and neither time did my machine shop have to replace any guides - just all 8 exh valves each time

and the pistons all had divots in them from where the exh valves hit but my local DSM guru (runs PRO rally) said "run em", so I did and have not had a problem 2K miles later

of course - neither failure occurred at > 2000 rpm, so that may be a factor

PS I have a nice spare bare 92 head, the desirable early manual trans cams, and a complete MT 14b turbo FS if anyone wants to upgrade
