How do i identify the vnt?

I have a friend who bought an 89 CSX. Thing is, this happens to have the Maserati 16v head from a Chrysler TC bolted atop the 2.2 mill. According to him (I've yet to view the car), a Garrett turbo is bolted up to the motor. What are some tell tale signs that the turbo is a VNT?

To put a VNT on a Masi 16v you'd have to have a flange welded to the exhaust manny as the bolt pattern is way different. The factory masi IHI turbo is very tiny, the VNT isn't much bigger. Either turbo is choking that motor off seriously.

I plan to look at it Saturday. He says the turbo is a Garrett. If it is VNT, which CSXs came stock with, could it be possible that the guy my buddy bought it from just slapped a Maser head on a turbo IV?

The T-4 block is the same as the T-2 other than the balance shaft used in the T-4.
The VNT does not use a wastegate, it has 4 vacuum lines, 2 to the actuator and 2 to the compressor housing as opposed to the 2 on the Garrett, wastegate and compressor housing.
The VNT uses 3 VNT Solenoids as opposed to one wastegate solenoid on the T-2 Garrett.
VNT is an engine code "C"(8th digit)

VNT SOLENOIDS,solenoid 1 is mounted on the strut tower, then VNT solenoids 2/3 and then the purge solenoid.(on fender, top to bottom)

Possibly, or he could of used the whole Masi engine and put the VNT on it. Because the crank, rods and pistons are much different than a T2 or T4. To mount the VNT there'd have to be a Chryco flange welded to the Masi exhaust manifold. Heck to mount any turbo other than stock requires a new flange as the bolt pattern is somewhat unique to the masi. A VNT will have a very sharp elbow on the exhaust side of the turbo for the O2. It's actuator for the vanes is in the middle of the turbo and the rod goes up and down instead of across the turbo.

Well, i spoke with my buddy this morning. It's got a wastegate on it, so no VNT. What's the hottest hybrid setup that could be made from the 2.2/2.5 turbo motors, anyway?

IMO the Masi is pretty much it, Flows as well as any of the rest of the heads out there. but has Cam on bucket top end, so much less rotating weight and the weight of the head makes a Lotus feel like it's made from cast iron. Something like a 33lb difference between those two heads.

The neon is ok on a 2.2/2.5 but it's much better, easier and cheaper to just go whole 2.4 in the case of using that head.

My buddy had the masi head blueprinted. If only for novelty's sake, would anyone be interested in a reproduction 16 valve direct 2.2/2.5 bolt on?
