It's funny this thread should come up because I just so happen to be looking at buying an 87 300zx Turbo. Looks like a sweet car. Can't beat T-Tops, two doors, two seats, and a v6 turbo RWD. I'll be buying it within the next few weeks hopefully. Whatever the outcome may be, it's gotta be more fun than my daily driver 268k mile 96 Grand Am. Eghkkkkk!!!

Being that it is a turbo it has the electronic adjustable suspension. Don't panic when you check the prices... some places want as much as $800/each... with some work you can find them for 200... but on the same token you can also buy an adapter kit (I think it's only needed for the rear actually) that will set you back $50 and a couple of KYBs for 34ish a piece. I just got a 1984 300zx turbo because someone beat the living hell out of the 85 daytona I have and I wasn't looking forward to just how much work it needed. If you are moreso of a dodge guy you will miss the simplicity... but love the things that ARE easier because it's RWD. If you should find yourself cussing at the spark plugs there's a tool under the carpet

Wow, been a while since I've been on here
This is an old post, teehee

Well, I WAS going to get a 300zx but then I stumbled across a 1990 Daytona Turbo five speed that's in better shape. So I decidd to get that. I love the interior on that year Daytona. I'll miss the RWD, but I think the five speed in the Daytona vs the auto in the zx will make up for the fun factor.

ok so after a few days of driving my new 300zx, i go to take the shadow out for a cruise since the big "downriver dream cruise" is going on all weekend here. ......the shadow is so freaking SLOW!!! i mean is still fun to drive since its a stick and all, but the car just won't move. i guess this is the motivation i needed to get off my lazy butt and put this turbocharger on it that ive been planning for months.

what a difference a turbo makes!!!

Also, the earlier question about interference engines. Yes, they are. The japanese love their interference engines like dodge loved their valvetrain noise

However, being a 1984 turbo it's running like 7.8:1 compression. I've heard that the old turbos are about a 50/50 chance of damaging something... The belt isn't bad at all though... once the shroud and fan is out of your way, there's a surprising amount of room in there. While you're in there... go ahead and change the CHTS and subharness (cylinder head temperature sensor) as it is a ***** to get to later and they can cause all kinds of wonky problems. If it's not doing anything strange I'd go ahead and change the subharness anyway. I've been told it's not a bad idea to do the tensioner, water pump, thermostat, and cam seals while you're at it either. <shrug>
Wiring can very much be a nightmare on these cars at times, but they are quite fun and usually worth the effort. I've been told it's not a bad idea to do the tensioner, water pump, thermostat, and cam seals while you're at it either. <shrug>

I don't know if you guys know this or not, but 1984 turbo 300zs, even the automatics are putting down 160 hp to the ground and that's on 5(!!) psi of boost. Stock injectors are supposed to be good for around 300 horsepower at the crank. 7.8 compression, 5 psi of boost, injectors good for 300 ponies... hmm... totally untweakable.

i just got my 300zx running today! YAY! no bent valves. thank god. the belt is really hard to get on though. it is a very tight squeeze. but it runs. i gave it a rev and the turbo still spools like it did before!! but i am supposed to be trading it for a 84 mustang.
