Not to a diesel. Gas engine yes, diesel no. A restrictive IC will yield less HP output than no intercooler at all.

Go check out http://www.gm-diesel.com and look at their forums. They have all sorts of info for what you can safely do to those motors.

Are these things as gutless as the old 6.9L Ford deisel(non turbo)? We had an 86 and lordy....i bet my New Yorker could out pull it. Deisels have come a long way in recent years.

No, he puts a camper on it, I don't know how long but it sticks over the tailgate and he has a long box, and he tows a 20 ft boat with ease, and still gets 14 mpg. The truck is heavy, ex cab, long box, 4x4 and the 4L80E trans.

Well the 6.5's still don't have that much power...but yes far better than any N/A ford diesel IE the 6.9 and 7.3 N/A. The 6.2 chevy in the 80's was THE WORST, it has 150 HP. Atleast the 6.9 has 170. The 6.5 turbo has 190 HP, but much better torque simply because of the turbo.

the 6.2 has an advertised HP of 155.

My truck will squeal the tires if I floor it from a stop sign.. But then again it has 4.10 ratio axles and a TH400.

6.5 turbo diesels have higher compression ratios than the fords and cummins, and because they lack an intercooler they run much less boost. I remember an article on the net where they changed pistons , injectors, computer ,boost levels etc. and were making easily as much power as ford and dodge with the cummins.
Another interesting little item I came across for the diesel engines is propane injection kits! They looked simple and the price was reasonable .Do a search and you should find something similar.

My truck has 217k on the clock. Very little blowby. No hard starts. No nothing. I better not say anything else though, somethin bad might happen.

Only mods this truck has every had is the original mufflers taken out for some redline strait through mufflers.

That's why a diesel sounds like a diesel. It's detonating. That's how it runs.

They lack an intercooler because gm is just cheap sometimes or probably figured that some average joe would come along and see turbo an figure that it would be as good as a Powerstroke or cummins.

Considering how diesels work and the noise they make while doing it. HAHA is right, I only read the article, I didn't write it.

That is a good one, detonate, hahhaaa.

anyhow, my brothers truck has 330,000 km's and still running strong. Compression is good, starts no problem, no smoke or blowby either, getting noisey but still way quieter than a Cummin's.
Its probably had 2 or 3 injection pumps though but that was before he bought it. He's had it 2 yrs and no pump problems yet, knock on wood, lol!
