ok, I know I dug up a really old thread, but whatever. My dad has a lot of experence with these trucks, and the problem that you can run into with the 6.5 is that the downpipe and the cat make the exhaust very restricted. the solution? remove the cat (i know, illeagle and all that crap, but who is going to know unless you have yearly inspections?) and get a replacment mandrel bent downpipe from BD-power.com next is to add the biggest flippen transmission cooler you can find if it has the 4L80-E transmission. also you can make a modification to your pipe that runs from the turbo to the intake manifold. there is and area about 2x4 that the air flows through, but you can cut out the whole area for maximum flow. also avaiable is from heath diesel. they have a chip that you can add that will increase the boost and thus lower your egt's

hope this helps out a little! :THUMB:

And what does spending all that several hundred dollars add, 20 HP? Maybe the chip would add another 40-50 for another several hundred dollars. I gained 90 HP in my 94' cummins for free, you pull the torque plate out and grind it flat....bam 90-100 HP on a 94-95 P7100 pump. Now on a 96-98 215 pump, you grind the plate flat and it's double that. 200 HP for free! Better get a good clutch first though, and atleast 4'' exhaust system. Oh and don't forget gauges so you don't melt anything from your FREE mod!

Ok, where are you getting your info. I was convinced that I could only go with a 981/2 for good power!! Please lmk where I should start studying. A 96 to 98 dodge is a lot more affordable.

Whoever told you that is dumb. Thats just some idiot thinking that 24 valve cummins are way better than 12 valves. They are not. The 94-98 trucks if equipped with a manual trans have very good injection pumps. The 96-98 auto isn't bad, but don't bother with the 94-95 auto.
The 96-98 P7100 injection pump is king, that pump makes massive power. Just with bolt on parts you can get a 12 valve cummins to 500 HP with it no problem.
The P7100 pump trucks are all mechanical, not like the VP44 pump on the 98.5-up 24 valve cummins they are electronic. The electronic trucks you have to buy ECU chips and boxes to make more power besides bigger injectors. The P7100 pump's you actually have to wrench and work on the truck. So, if you are a plug and play kind of guy, 24 valve's are good for you. If you like to wrench, 12 valve with the P pump.

Well, thanks for the info. I am very interested in the fuel eco and performance of the 96-98. My dad has a 2001 with injectors and opened air intake appox. 320hp alot of fun compared to stock. If I could ( with some wrenchin) get around 380hp that would be great with the older model. I am very new to diesel turbos but need a truck for fire wood ect.... mini van does not cut it. fun but not big enough. Are there anywebsites that explain some of these mods? Very interested. I see alot for the newer ones

If you get a 96-98 manual tranny you can get 350 RWHP with one FREE modification. But first you need to upgrade the clutch, get boost and pyrometer gauges, and 4'' exhuast system. The stock turbo will still be crying for mercy with just that one mod and your exhaust temps may still get hot.
www.turbodieselregister.com is the number one source of information.

Thank you very much. I am a bit of a nut when it comes to turbo dodges.
I guess there are a few of use here. 4 turbo mini vans 2 daytona's a 88 mustang with a 473bb 500rwhp and soon to be a 89 Dodge Colt Turbo w 4G63engine. Need a good truck and will only buy a dodge.

What the heck.... is the HP gain free or do you have to buy stuff to really get it??!! Saying "one free mod....then saying you need to get this part or that and exhaust" is not free.
Yes I understand that if you do a mod you get a good HP gain.
The only problem with the Dodge's is keeping a transmission behind the Cummins...auto trans. I know people with 2004's and 2005's on their 2nd or 3rd trans. No, they don't beat the hell out of them and don't have a ton of miles on them. Definately the manual trans is the way to go.

You can buy a kit to relocate the driver to the fender well. Also, that resistor that everyone is talking about can be changed. I know the hummers(military) have higher hp and torque numbers. There comp may be slightly higher, 22 or 23 to 1 I think. I believe most gm truck 6.5 applications ran 18 to 1. That resistor is part of the control in the driver. Different resistor, more power! Im not a diesel expert, just work next to one.
