Greets to all! I'm new here but a MoPar guy from WAY back.
Been wanting to get into turbocharging for a LONG time now but what I lack is a knowledge of actually what brands/models/specs ect are out there now. I have a few books on the subject but they are outdated and the brands/models are out of production. I have a '94 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0L I6 that I think would be ideal to turbocharge. BUT, I don't have any idea which turbocharger brand/model to choose for the project. My proformance goals are NOT drag racing. Want I want is more efficency for better mileage and a bit better off the line torque.
Any suggestions?

Dear DR...

Check out the August addition of JP Magazine. In there you will find an artical on turboing the 4.0L. 505 Performance offers a simple bolt on kit that is fairly straitforward. It gives you 6psi of boost, but with an alky system you could turn it up some more.
I recommend the Garrett used on the Buick GN, if you go it alone. It will work out well for you size wise on your 4.0L., and is readily avaliable on ebay. 6psi will be good for an additonal 60-70hp. With an alky injection setup as well you could get closer to 100hp.

By the way... welcome to the board.

Bad new is nobody sells JP Magazine around here. I checked the JP website and there are no details on that article listed.
Now, What model Garrett turbocharger did the Buick GNs use?

Ok, did some running around this morning and found Aug JP at Walmart. Read the article and I wasn't really impressed with the kit for the price. $3550 for a kit that looks like a high school science project. Also they say to expect 10% lower fuel economy. WHOOA, I thought you should expect the same or better fuel economy from a well executed turbo install. Not for me at all!!
Also the kit lacks an intercooler and any kind of spark advance control. For the price you would expect that.
I will probably find a Garrett T60 and build my own from scratch.

Yes, $3,500 isn't exactly cheap, I'll agree with you there. Some folks though have the coin to spend and don't want to get there hands dirty. You could do it yourself much cheaper if you don't mind a little work and have tools, welder, ect... Another thing I noticed about their turbo kit is that it (the turbo) is not water cooled. (not the best setup for a street driven vehicle)
As for fuel ecconomy, I don't know about an increase with a turbo, but when I added mine it didn't get any worse. (at least not when I'm driving normally)

Your stock compression is 8.8:1, with that you should be able to run 6-7psi no problem. Good luck with your project.
