3.0L 24V Heads?

for the 3.0L... some extremely speculative info...
I have been thinking a lot lately... and doing some researching...
The stock from the factory 6g72 12v SOHC engine puts out a whopping 142hp at the crank...
The 10:1 mitsu version puts out 164 hp... so that leads me to believe that 10:1 pistons are worth about 20hp (same engine, same year, only diff is pistons... both are 12v)
The montero came with 24v heads... i'm not entirely sure how the water jackets are set up... but the montero put out 177 hp (if someone knows, please pm me) thats 35 hp over the 12v... oh, and thats with 9:1 compression, vs. the 8.89:1 compression of the chrysler version...
the new eclipse 3.0L 24v puts out 205 hp with 9:1 compression...
again, this is all speculative... but i would estimate 200 hp with just heads (if they fit) and 10:1 pistons... this is all n/a... then add all the normal 3.0L stuff, i'm seeing 225 hp from bolt-ons, heads, and high comp pistons... thats comparable to the dohc n/a...
still not enough? open up those heads and do a few more minor modifications... i figure around 240 hp n/a... if not more... fabricate a set of headers, you're sitting at 255 hp or so...
STILL not enough? yank those high comp. pistons, slap in some 8.0:1 comp pistons, replace those headers with a turbo manifold, and i could easily see 325 hp... comparable with the dohc-tt... and a similar setup, actually...
again... this is all speculative... and these numbers are extremely conservative... i would not be surprised with 300 hp n/a and 400+ hp t/c
and i did a little bit of looking (head gasket comparing) and it looks like the water jackets between the 12v and 24v sohc are slightly different, but not majorly... i think the bigger hurdle would be having them mount up and run the belt correctly... with all this stuff, you now have an interference engine...
i plan on going tomorrow to see if the local u-pull-it has any 24v montero heads
if nothing else, i can clean them up and sell them on ebay or something...

since i'm lazy and don't want to pull heads off an engine if i dont need them (not to mention they would cost around $40 ea. at a u-pull-it yard)...
i would be greatly appreciative of pictures of the following items:
Dodge SOHC 12V 6g72 straight on shot of head or top of block
Mitsu SOHC 24V 6g72 stright on shot of head or top of block
Gaskets pictures of either would suffice...

i remember seeing someone build up a spirit on cardomain......they were doin a 3.0l DOHC turbo.......but they didnt finish the project due to lack of funding.......

If only the SOHC & DOHC engines had the same orientation. It would be the killer 3.0 swap mod.

I don't have a DOHC block anymore to take pictures of, but I was considering building one for mine till I checked a few things. First, it only puts out 220hp NA, second the mount and orientation problem, third, the engine electronics (DOHC Misubishi uses a DIS, SOHC use a distributor) fourth, the weight of the package vs. the 2.2L turbo 2 engine/transmission. I researched the block/head matchup and they are the same bolt pattern and passages for either. The oil pump and tensioner are different as is the filter location. The water pump is different also. I have a spreadsheet of the parts for the Chrysler, and Mitsubishi SOHC and DOHC. I had acquired 2 Diamonte DOHC engines, both of which had thrown connecting rods. Between them I had enough to build one complete engine. If you are interested, PM me with your email, it is in MSexcel format.

There really isnt much different between the 3.0 and the 2.2 in weight. They use the same transmission, and the a543 tranny bolts up to all 6g72 blocks and ag74 blocks, and 6g75 blocks.
The 24v sohc distributor wont work with our electronics, and the 24v dohc needs DIS ignition.
You have to use a complete block because the sohc blocks cant bolt up the timing belt tensioner for 24v heads.
BTW, slightly modded 24v dohc motors (the most powerful) often only dyno 180fwhp n/a. The most I have seen is 220 fwhp and that was with a LOT of expensive engine mods ($3000 ported heads, etc).
I put more then 245+whp down on 5.2 psi boost. Thats with stock sohc heads. If you spent the $$$$$$$ time to do a Dohc conversion and didnt turbo it, I would call you a fool. They will make 290-300FWHP (dyno proven) on only 5 psi if you build a good setup. You will need custom exhaust anyways, and its impossible to route exhaust under the motor thanks to the K-frame, so you basically better turbo it (or have plans to and build your manifold so a turbo can just be bolted on).

if its possible to make them fit, i still think the 24v sohc heads would be a vast improvement over 12v... kinda like 8v vs. 16v...
i'll keep looking into it, but as of right now, money is being allocated elsewhere

Old posts but the mitsu dohc block won't bolt up to your chrysler transmission. You can put the dohc heads on the chrysler version since there more different than placement of oil pump.
