so im reading the sticky and it seems the ignition system can help free up some power. I thought i read on the dodge garage that there really wasnt much extra power to be found in the ignition system but ill give it a shot.

so heres what im looking at:
cap+rotor w/brass points (bluestreak?)
Accel Coil - 140021
Magnecor 8.5mm wires - 45153
NGK V-power plugs - 2635

any recomendations? part numbers look right? anything else i should upgrade?

anyone try this? results?

Don't bother with that coil. I've used Accel and MSD units, with decent results. But I just love the Ford coil I have installed.

ignition systems dont make power but a bad system will rob power. in my super latemodel this past summer, it just seemed to be down on power... started out the year with 685hp off my dyno.. about mid season, my lap times dropped 1/10 sec and it just didn't seem to put me in the seat as much... so I pulled valve covers and replaced all the valve springs (normal anyway mid season) no change so I pulled the engine and re-dyno'd dang dropped 140hp... WTF tried other carbs, pulled the cam and put it on the cam dyno...right on.. every thing seems in place but still down on hp. Well I killed the lights in my dyno room and when running the engine, I noticed a blue haze around the plug wires.. weird so on went new wires and bingo... 685hp again. that was a strange deal because I never got shocked or any cross firing ... but goes to show that poor wires kill power.

Blue Streak etc. You have to remember, the plug wires have the terminals, not the cap. Get a good set of wires, Aurora, Magnacore.

...and stay as far away from that Accel Coil as you can. I've never had any luck with any Accel product and could fill an entire thread just with the many Accel part failures me and my family have endured over the years.

A fresh coil wouldn't hurt, forgot to add that. MSD replacements are fine as are aftermarket stockers, IE Blue Streak, Neihoff etc.

I second that. I had a yellow accel coil in my satellite for all of a couple months before it took a poop on me, and I was running the proper ballast and everything. I bought another and it was running stupid right out of the box. I went to the junkyard and pulled one out of a 80's dodge ram, worked like a charm. I returned the coil I could, threw the other one in the garbage and sucked up my loss.

Accel product failures within my family:
- SB Mopar distributor, siezed bushings less than 2k miles
- SB Mopar wires, removed same day of installation because the old 100k wires ran better
- 5.2 Magnum coil, never made it out of town before dying
- Round coil on '73 Ford, died after 5k miles

I'll never buy another Accel product, buy family members keep trying them.

I am so tired of reading "Made in China". So much of the China stuff is junk. I can't stand it, when a major brand company goes to China to make its product. They get it cheap, and charge us the regular price, as if it were made here. Watch what you buy, and read where it is made.
