hey,
im looking to put an intake on my 3.0 duster, where would u guys suggest putting it? i got a cheapo filter and just reused some of the stock plumbing, but it sat behind the radiator on top of the valve cover.... it couldn't be much of a cold air intake from there. after a few weeks that car started tapping and smoking so i took it off.. i donno if its coincidence or what, but after replacing the original intake system it runs fine again.
im hoping if i get a decent filter and put it somewhere where it can actually get cold air i shouldn't have any problems.

Not at all. The top of the filter is right behind the radiator support. The bottom of the filter hangs about 3" below the support. It is definately getting "good" air, but not have had a problem getting water ingested. I guess as long as you don't drive through any ponds/creeks/beach areas, you'll be fine.

from what i hear it is bad to have dryer pipe AFTER the filter as dirt/dust can get in thru small holes in the hose.....i have a stock airbox on a 2.5l with a stock filter.....
my filter is directly before the TB and holy crap does that thing get dirty.....i get rocks up there.......

You can get a simple 90 deg bend of pipe to work if you cut a little material off the backside of the battery tray so the pipe can pass by. Looks a lot better then a lot of the 3.0 setups you see. There are holes in the AA body that actually will let you relocate the battery tray an inch or 2 further up. Ive done that and made lots of room, easily fitting 3" pipe for the intake and not actually needing to hack up the battery tray. I prefer the hack method, because you can only put in a few bolts when you move the tray.

I used two 3.3 rubber intake bends and two pieces of exhaust piping to make a 'Z' pipe that comes out right in front of the battery. With the K&N filter I'm using, it puts the air filter right by a hole in the nose of the Baron. After a 20 minute trip around town, I stopped and checked the pipes. They were cool to the touch on a 95 degree day, so I guess it works. I'll take pictures tomorrow and post them.

As you can see in the pictures, the 3.3 intake bends and some exhaust piping bring the filter just in front of the battery. There's just enough room between the computer and the hole behind the headlight that the filter will fit in. The filter was $26 from AJUSA. The junkyard bends with hose clamps were $1 a piece. The exhaust pipe was $5. So $33 total. Not bad. It's 2.5 inch pipe by BTW.

I ran 14.8@92 in my n/a spirit with this intake. Works the same if you have the plenum in standard position and remove a bit of the back of the battery tray (and you dont have abs).
In the standard position, it will be pointing towards the ground, and will be in the path of cold air. The version in my picture doesnt get cold air unless I remove the headlight. Doesnt matter anymore with turbo, I dont run a filter or intake when I race

Moparbishi, what did you wrap your intake in? Looks like some kind of shielding. I like where you routed it, but I wasn't ready to move the battery yet. Maybe in the future.
Ondonti, that's pretty cool. I see you have the intake spacers in there. Otherwise the TB would hit the various things on the passenger side of the engine. Did you ever route the intake to the driver side before flipping it around? I was wondering if you noticed any significant difference in it being over on that side. Though I guess it's hard to tell since the spacers are in there now, and they make a difference too...
